Final Jeopardy: Old Geographic Names (12-7-21)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/7/2021) in the category “Old Geographic Names” was:

This term once used for western North Africa is still used today in the name of a primate from that region

Quarterfinal No. 2 of the 2021 Professors Tournament features: Marti Canipe, an elementary science education professor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ; John Harkless, an associate professor of chemistry at Howard University in Washington, DC; and Katie Reed, an associate professor of musicology at Cal State Fullerton.

Round 1 Categories: Before He Was President – Nonfiction – Office, Ours – Pop Culture – Mountains – In the Curriculum

Marti found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Non-Fiction” under the $400 clue with 14 clues left after it. She was in third place with $1,400, half of Katie’s lead. Marti bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Katie finished in the lead with $14,000. John was second with $12,000 and Marti was last with $10,400. No clues went uncovered.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS BARBARY?

Perhaps the word “western” in the clue threw two of the contestants today. It certainly gave me pause when I saw the clue because in my mind, the Barbary Coast extends to Libya. That’s not part of western Africa to me. Check out the maps on this article about The Barbary Wars, covering the Barbary pirates and the young United States’ involvement in the Barbary Wars. Over the years, Jeopardy! clues have covered much of that information.

As for the Barbary ape, one showed up in a video Daily Double on 12/26/2019. Jeopardy! also covered this tidbit in an old clue from 1990: THE ANIMAL KINGDOM ($200) Some macaques have long ones, some have short ones & the Barbary ape doesn’t have one at all

Marti got it right. She added $3,000 to her score, bringing her up to $13,400.

John came up with rhesus after crossing out “bur”. He lost his $8,000 bet and was left with $4,000.

Katie thought it was the bonobo monkey. She lost her $2,000 bet and had $12,000 left. That puts her in a tie with Hester on the Wild Card list. Marti is today’s winner and the second semi-finalist.

Final Jeopardy (12/7/2021) Marti Canipe, John Harkless, Katie Reed

3 triple stumpers from BEFORE HE WAS PRESIDENT:

($600) in a duel

($1000) He was Sheriff of Erie County & Mayor of Buffalo

Regarding the final question, I wouldn’t have described the Barbary Coast as being situated exclusively in “western North Africa” as was suggested.

So far, after 2 shows, it seems to me that these folks are a notch beneath regular season contestants. Also, this was, possibly, the most boring game I’ve seen in years. There seemed to be a palpable fear of aggressive DD betting, but, then, there was that “Oh, that’s easy” recognition of a clue, but, I couldn’t tell if they realized they should have bet more. And, I have to be honest – it was “hosting Jeopardy! Ken Jennings”, but this was announced “the host of Jeopardy! Mayim Bialik”. I haven’t missed an episode in years, but, she might make me.

I thought Marti was supposed to select first in the first round.

Well Katie was close since the Bonboro is an endangered species. Not sure how many of those monkeys are still alive. At least now we have another wildcard winner so hopefully Katie will improve her skills when she reaches the semi finals. Speaking of the barbary ape, the wildlife trivia had a question on this animal as well which I find very interesting, Never heard of the menshiviks before.

    • Jason says:

The Mensheviks were the “White Army”. Recall the “Soviet Red Army” athletes, like, the hockey teams? That’s the “red” of the movie “Reds”, and who were opposed by the “Whites”.

    • Howard says:

No one has clinched a wild card spot yet.

  6. Kevin Cheng says:

There’s one thing missing, we don’t see the scores at the end of the first round.

    • VJ says:

Thanks, Kevin. It’s in there now.

My son recommended that Starz wrestling TV series to me. The whole first season is on there so I got a month’s subscription to Starz and watched the whole thing. I hope they have a Season 2.
