WHO IS NICK CHARLES?

The quote about Nick Charles’ rich wife and former profession in Dashiell Hammett’s “The Thin Man” (1934) specifies that it’s been 6 years since 1927. He says his father-in-law died a year after he married and left his wife “a lumber mill and narrow-gauge railroad and some others things and I quit the Agency to look after them.” In the 1934 “Thin Man” film, William Powell as Nick Charles pretty much says the same thing, only it’s four years since he quit being a detective. Another reference to his wife’s money in both book and movie is when she asks him why he doesn’t want to take the murder case. He says: “I’m too busy seeing you don’t lose the money I married you for.” Dashiell Hammett never wrote a sequel to the book, but the 1934 film was followed by 5 sequels.

From the 2018 Teacher’s Tournament: MYSTERIES & THRILLERS ($2000) “The Thin Man” by this author is about a former detective & his rich wife solving a murder amid high society

Martha wrote down “Dick Tracy.” She lost her $7,000 bet and finished with $2,800.

Nick thought it was Sam Spade. That cost him $7,801 and left him $3,999.

Allyson didn’t have a response. She lost her modest $5,200 bet and won the game with $9,500. Allyson Samiljan is the new Jeopardy! champ.

And so the leader curse continues, I don’t think Allyson will win game two but we will see. Even I would not have gotten that wof response either. I just hope that someone will break the curse hopefully. How did Nick not know the song my country tis of thee VJ? I mean back in grade school I sang it after.the pledge of allegiance and it has been in my memories for a long time.

Just because he couldn’t think of the last 3 words to the first verse on the spot doesn’t mean he doesn’t know the song, Lou.

It seems like there’s just some bad mojo going around this week. JJ got knocked out of the clue game on Monday. Yesterday, the winner on WoF didn’t get any of her letters when she picked a $50K card in the Bonus Round. Today, an awful coincidence that one of the players was named Nick!
