The Final Jeopardy question (1/16/2024) in the category “New Nations” was:

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE THE COOK ISLANDS?

First of all, wikipedia’s article Associated State has the details on “free association”, with a list of political territories in that category. (It’s not that many,). The Cook Islands and Nuie are the minor partners in such an arrangement with New Zealand, which began in 1965 and 1974, respectively.

In September of 2023, the United States formally established diplomatic ties with the Cook Islands and Niue, “in a move widely seen as part of efforts to roll back China’s expanding influence in a strategically important region”, according to Kyodo News, Japan’s largest news agency.

Sharon wrote out her wish that Andy would “bet it all.” She lost $6,000 and finished with $100.

Andy got it right. He bet $1,800 and won the game with $23,600. Andy advances to the semi-finals.

IMO much much harder clues, DDs and FJ than last night, although I did know the Mario Savio DD. Hard to believe no one knew how to cook an egg. Those two “track stars” are legendary in that sport. I had a few Chapter12 cases (family farms) in the 21+ years I worked in that field. Wasn’t certain about the Amendment but got it.

Usually, these Champions games are better. I was thinking that in the first round. But, in Double, that kinda came off the rails. Both Katie and Sharon should have known better with “phrase as a question”. That’s just minor league.

I thought Ken was just a bit sharp with “Neruda was Chilean”.

    I didn’t get FJ. Since I didn’t know, I said “Molucca”.

    Good luck to Andy.

The egg stumper was the real head scratcher

  4. Rick says:

I was surprised that none of the contestants could come up with a response to a few of the easy ones (such as the Fourth Amendment), but then again, I couldn’t come up with a response for FJ.

  5. Kevin Cheng says:

I felt really bad for Katie, she started off really well in the first round where she and Andy had an impressive round. Then Andy was running away with this game and this caused Katie to have to take guesses to catch up, but that didn’t work our well for her and she dipped into the hole late in the round. With only 2 clues left in DJ! She was at-1.000 with 2 clues left worth 800 total and it’s over for her because there’s no way for her to get out of the hole and play FJ! She wasn’t around for FJ! But Katie is still a Jeopardy champion for the rest of her life.
