Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Plays (9-25-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/25/2018) in the category “20th Century Plays” was:

From its preface: “It is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth without making some other Englishman hate…him”

New champ Nancy Schoppa, a retired high school teacher from St. Jo, TX, won $3,600 yesterday. In Game 2, she takes on these two players: Vincent Valenzuela, an internal customer service manager from Wheaton, IL; and Courtney Llewellyn, an assistant editor from New Orleans.

Vincent was invited back after a snafu in the July 13, 2017 game cost him the win.

Round 1 Categories: Queen Consort – Letter Perfect – Complete the 21st Century Bestseller – Hats – Fun With Team Names – The Unseen

Vincent found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Queen Consort” under the $1,000 clue, with just one category to go after it. He was in second place with $4,000, $800 less than Nancy’s lead. He bet $1,000 and guessed “Mary.” That was WRONG.

Cities in North Carolina, Virginia & Prince Edward Island are named for this consort of George III. show

Nancy finished in the lead with $5,600. Courtney was second with $5,000 and Vincent was last with $3,000.

Round 2 Categories: Queen’s Concert – Mythological Origin Stories – Come Up to the Lab – Ocean Liners – Other Rather Grand Canyons – “ALA” Cart

Vincent found the first Daily Double in “Mythological Origin Stories” under the $1,200 clue on the 3rd pick. He was in third place with $4,200 now, $1,400 behind Nancy’s lead. He bet $1,200 and thought it was a ray of light. That was WRONG.

While delivering messages, Iris was said to travel along one of these. show

Vincent found the last Daily Double in “Ocean Liners” under the $800 clue on the 17th pick. In the lead with $11,400, he had $1,000 more than Nancy in second place. He bet $2,000, and he was RIGHT.

In 1982 the QE2 was requisitioned to transport troops to these islands. show

Nancy finished in the lead with $16,400. Vincent was next with $14,200 and Courtney was in third place with $8,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “PYGMALION”?

“A Professor of Phonetics”, the entire preface to George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play, can be read on Bartleby.com. The only words they left out of the quote are “or despise”. Shaw also laments how the English do not teach their children to speak properly. Parts of the preface, along with parts of the latter part of Act One, are reflected in the song “Why Can’t the English” in the 1956 Broadway stage musical “My Fair Lady” (Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews). (The video clip of the song is from the 1964 “My Fair Lady” film with Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn).

Here’s another Final Jeopardy! from 2008 where the preface showed up: EARLY 20th CENTURY PLAYS: Its preface says, “The English have no respect for their language, & will not teach their children to speak it”

Courtney wrote down “Waiting for Godot.” She lost $1,600 and finished with $7,000.

Vincent got it right. He bet it all, bringing him up to $28,400.

Nancy got it right, too. She bet $15,000 and won the game with $31,400, and that certainly makes up for yesterday! Her 2-day total is $35,000.

Final Jeopardy (9/25/2018) Nancy Schoppa, Vincent Valenzuela, Courtney Llewellyn

A triple stumper from each round:

Oh, wow. We ended with TWO players got it right on that one, but what keywords led up to that response?

    • VJ says:

@John Christian, the clue implies the plot of this particular play — speaking English badly. A phonetics professors teaches a Cockney flower girl to speak proper English.

If the category was Films, it would have a different answer — here’s another old clue where you have to give the author: Wouldn’t it be loverly for you to name this author of “Pygmalion”, from which “My Fair Lady” was adapted.

“Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” is the name of the one of the songs in “My Fair Lady”

  2. Lou says:

Interesting how Vincent and Nancy got Pygmalion today. I was thinking about how Gilbert Collins started off with a small win in his run and he built up constantly. So I am curious to know if Nancy might do what Gilbert did VJ.

Plus. How did Vincent confuse a Ray of light with a rainbow in one of the daily doubles? Mary hasn’t been a girls name city in the states of Virginia or north Carolina. I think he might have said Mary queen of Scots. What do you guys think?.

    Congratulations to Nancy again.

    • John B./I. says:

      @LOU
Probably because the IRIS is part of the eye, controlling the size of the pupil and therefore controlling the amount of LIGHT. IRIS =LIGHT ??
The iris also determines what eye color one has. A blue eyed guy has a blue iris etc.

  3. John B./I. says:

Congratulations to Nancy, nice payday. I did not expect her to be in the lead given yesterday’s performance. But then yesterday was a game to forget anyway.
VJ made the right prediction, so congratulations to her as well. I am curious: IF Nancy wins a 3rd game, will she earn enough to replace Jeffrey? He has 62.300 right now, so Nancy would have to win 27.301 or a fourth game.
Two FJ clues in a row about English “subjects” ( Shaw was Irish, but Pygmalion and the musical adaptation are set in London).

    • VJ says:

Well, we have seen many times that a good or bad game doesn’t mean the next one will be similar. Rob had a runaway on Friday, after all. It was hard to pick who to root for today given Nancy’s game result yesterday and Vincent’s from last July.

Congrats back at you, John, on your prediction.

P.S. I knew that one on the former American Idol now fronting Queen because I just recently saw a couple of articles where Brian May talked about it. I recapped the Idol season he was in but if I had not seen those articles, I don’t think I would have recognized him from the photo that was shown (it’s on the extra clues post)
