Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/13/2018) in the category “Modern Language” was:

This slang term for an environmentalist is literally true of groups that used passive resistance vs. deforestation, as in India in 1973

New champ Michelle Cabral, an elem. school music teacher from Canada, won $18,400 yesterday. In Game 2, she takes on these two guys: Vincent Valenzuela, an internal customer service manager from Illinois; and Bryan Rucker, a writer from Los Angeles.

Vincent found the last Daily Double in “Irish History” under the $1,200 clue, with just 2 clues left after it. In third place with $6,800, he had $7,400 less than Michelle’s lead. Taking his best shot, he bet all of it. He jumped into second place when he was RIGHT.

Vincent finished in the lead with $15,200. Michelle was next with $14,200 and Bryan was in third place with $11,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS A TREEHUGGER?

This slang term for environmentalists, sometimes used in a derogatory way, came from the 1973 Chipko Movement that began in Uttar Pradesh, India. IndiaTimes.com says: “The name ‘Chipko’ comes from the word ’embrace’, as the villagers hugged the trees and prevented them from being cut down.” They also note that it wasn’t a new idea by any means. Way back in 1730 in India, a tribe called the Bishnoi followed the lead of Amrita Devi, in trying to prevent the destruction of khejri trees. Many were killed by the King of Jodhpur’s men. For the full story on that, watch “The Oldest Tree Huggers, on youtube.

Bryan got it right. He didn’t bet anything so he stayed at $11,800.

Michelle got it right, too. She bet $4,000 and finished with $18,200.

Vincent wrote down the correct response, then crossed it out and wrote down “Carl Sagan.” He lost his $13,201 bet and landed in third place with $1,999. Ouch!

Final Jeopardy (7/13/2018) Michelle Cabral, Vincent Valenzuela, Bryan Rucker

    Carl Sagan?

Portland did not have the first new streetcar line since WWII. Did I miss a qualifier that it was IT’S first one since WWII ?

    • VJ says:

      @Robert, this was the clue:

In 2001 this City of Roses got the USA’s first new streetcar line since WWII & it’ll take you to the Rose Quarter

  3. Richard Corliss says:

The last Jeopardy! category should’ve been “Naked desire”. Because of the Wheel of Fortune puzzle.

  4. John B./I. says:

Congratulations to Michelle, winning by default. She made the least fatal error of all 3. Bryan would have won betting all or all but a buck and Vincent… I would have loved to be a fly on the wall in the studio when Alex talked to Vincent after the game. I agree with VJ that low wagering will do Michelle in sooner or later. She might run into a buzz saw on Monday unless she will be the only one coming up with the right response in FJ and have enough money, You can go to the well only so often…. she lucked out twice and today was just incredible. To not know it is one thing, but to have it right (and an easy solution at that) and then blow it….wow!
This FJ will rank probably with 3 others: the ones where only 1 player (a lady) was left, when all 3 ended up with zero and when the champ (I believe I remember a uniform) won one dollar.
What happened with Vincent? I have only 2 (very very far fetched) explanations and I don’t buy the “I misread the clue”, he HAD it right and the clue was as straight as can be, asking for a group. Had Vincent said “Jacques Cousteau” it would have made a LITTLE more since since Cousteau always work with a crew/group. But Sagan and Cousteau were single people and not groups.

Vincent pulled a prank. The show was taped on April 1, he is a multimillionaire, showed that he KNEW the answer and the correct bet, then wrote “Carl Sagan” and said “April’s fool”.
    2.
Some med kicked in exactly when Vincent wrote his response.

If someone has a better explanation, PLEASE let me know. I’m glad that my heart is ship-shape, otherwise I would have had a heart attack when I read his response.
7 of us all agreed at the same number of solutions (3), no other prediction, all 7 of us were wrong. When did that ever happen ? Vincent HAD IT, FCOL!!
@Everybody: can’t think of that “bleep” 4 letter word, can somebody give me a hint, please??
Well, I need the weekend to recover from this!
    Be that as it may:
Have a safe, great, enjoyable weekend everybody!!!

    • John Christian Ambion says:

Yeah, she won by DEFAULT, since the third placer wages nothing, and the leader made an incorrect response by misreading the clue.

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

Wow, Vincent played a very bad game. The bleep in the DJ round, as well as misreading the clue in FJ, proved costly for him. However, the weekend ends with a 2-time champion, I hope she makes it to four.

  6. William Weyser says:

    It’s $13,201, not $13,021.

  7. RT81 says:

Michelle a very good player but she has to clean up her FJ wagerings or it could end badly for her.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

Indeed, a small wager in FJ could potentially crash her out soon. Let’s hope she risked a bundle.

  8. Louis says:

I loved that bleep from Vincent. I thought he was going to say ass in an instant. So funny I tell you VJ. Oh there is a mistake in Bryan’s name. You had him as ryan Rucker. Also, Vincent should have stayed with his original response if he wanted to defeat Michelle but it seems that cost him the game. But overall, a great game played today by all the players. There is a chance that Michelle can turn this around but it won’t keep Wes in the 15th spot in the tournament of champions for very long. By the way what year does the term tree hugger date back to?

    • Richard Corliss says:

It wasn’t the same thing that happened last time when Penn Jillette said “Bull ______” category, that he must be thinking about the t.v. title show where he and Teller were starred in.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, yeah, quite a break for Michelle who would not have lost because she bet too little today if Vincent hadn’t crossed off his first and correct instinct. Wow, that’s gotta be worse to lose that way. He would have won $28K+

Thanks to you and to William for the heads up on the typos — they’re fixed.

      • John B./I. says:

you mean” she would not have won today…”??

        • VJ says:

no, John, I meant lost — if he had not crossed it off, she would have lost but she would not have lost because she didn’t bet enough.

You can’t tell the bleeped word starts with “S”? Watch again.

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
I think I got it. So she would not have lost today because she bet not enough (like yesterday, had Johanna been right) but because Vincent would have beaten her anyway by a buck even if she had wagered all. So today’s win was not money related since Vincent got it wrong anyway. OK.
As for the 4 letter “S” word, yeah I got it but since it said “KA” in the clue I thought Vincent said a word starting with “A”, as required by the clue. I thought there is a bad 4 letter slang word for “associates”, but then a…….. has 8 letters..:):)

    • John B./I. says:

      I believe mid – 1970s..

    • John B./I. says:

It DID cost him the game He would have beaten Michelle by a buck, even had she bet it all.
