Toni Tennille’s Bad Romance

Grammy-winning 70s songstress Toni Tennille has a new memoir out and she is currently promoting the “never told before” story of how her marriage to the Captain (Daryl Dragon) was a sham.

On “Inside Edition,” Toni says “What finally got us to marry was when our accountant said ‘You know, you could pay a lot less taxes if you were married.'” What she says after that in the above video implies that she wanted to get married and the Captain didn’t, but after the accountant brought that up, he said “okay.” She goes on to say that she stayed married to Daryl for 39 years in large part because she didn’t want to disappoint her fans who thought she had a fairy tale marriage.

Toni’s revelation that they got married for financial reasons inadvertently lends a little support to the rumors that the couple got divorced in 2014 for financial reasons. She revealed in 2010 that her then husband was suffering from a disease similar to Parkinson’s and the speculation was that she was protecting her assets from major medical costs relating to his condition.

The fairy tale that never was is at best confusing. Toni often talked about Darryl in loving terms and portrayed them as a loving couple on her old blog so if there’s anyone to blame for deceiving the fans, it would be more on her than Daryl. Her marriage, she told People, was “never tender” and “never emotional” but she still claims that Daryl was “the one.”
