Supporting Cast of Time Takes a Cigarette: Ray Donovan

Here are some of the actors who appeared in “Time Takes a Cigarette” (10-29-2017), the Season 5 finale of “Ray Donovan.” The episode recap is here.

Hey you guys! Don’t work with Ray.

Kacey Montoya played Sandy Gagic, the Stalkerazzi TV reporter. Her character has been in several episodes this season, but we’re glad we saved her for last because in the finale, she got to call Ray “a bully with a baseball bat” when she reported that he was all washed up in L.A. He’s going to wash up in New York City now, in the literal sense, unless that was just one of his hallucinations.

I hope Doug goes to hell

Scarlett Burke played Lindsay Penn, the actress brought in to replace Natalie James in the “Waterfall” series. The look she shot at Ray in the Eddington hotel hallway after her session with Doug Landry seemed to simultaneously ask “is he going to see Doug?” and “does he know?” She will probably be happy to hear about Landry’s demise. Even if she sees Sandy Gagic’s report and recognizes Ray and makes that connection, she’s not likely to say anything– at least for 10 years or so.

Forgive yourself

This is the picture that Ray took from a keepsake box in his and Abby’s bedroom at the Calabasas home. It triggered a memory of finding his mother dead in her bed. We assume it was Abby who was keeping the photo and she may have been the one who wrote that “Forgive yourself” message on the back. Ray already had heard that same message from Dr. Brogan earlier and later, when he let Sam Winslow see the photo, she told him that she had tried to forgive herself but, after many shrinks and charlatans, she decided she didn’t really want to. It was better to just take what you want from this life and not wait for permission. Don’t ask us what the one thing has to do with the other.

Other Notes:

• Terry once again tried to talk to Ray about Abby’s death. Ray just ignored him and went off to murder Landry. When you think about it, if Ray really had any thought in his mind of doing away with himself, why would he bother to pay that debt to Sam Winslow?
• When Terry went back to the gym after Smitty’s surgery, Damon and his father were in the ring. Terry just leaned against the ropes and didn’t start anything. Perhaps he is realizing that he is being as hard-nosed about Mason as Ray is being on him.
• Remember when Ray first got involved in the “Frank Barnes wants Avi dead” thing? Supposedly, the main reason they couldn’t just kill Frank was because their own dirty dealings with him would be exposed. Now Mickey has told Jackson Holt that Frank was on Ray’s payroll for years. We don’t know if that is going to be entirely dropped but we like to keep track of these little things. Sometimes they do come back up, like the Nevada murders did in this season.
