Supporting Cast of Sunny: Ray Donovan

Here are some of the actors who appeared in Sunny, the eighth episode of Season 2 of Ray Donovan.

Kwame Patterson and Octavius J. Johnson made their last appearances as hip-hop producer Re-Kon and his “adopted” son Marvin Gaye Washington. (He really bought Marvin off his mother while Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber) acted as the middle man.) Lee Drexler decided he knew how to deal with black people and thought he could buy his way out of a deal with Cookie Brown. But it wasn’t all about the Benjamins after all and Cookie decided to kill the goose that laid the golden egg right along with Re-Kon. Somehow Cookie failed to notice Bridget Donovan’s “pasty white ass” in the back seat while he took out Marvin.

Did you know that Marvin Gaye actually did a cover of Bobby Hebb’s song “Sunny”? Yes, him and tons of others, including James Brown, Cher, José Feliciano and Billy Cosby. Even Leonard Nimoy got in on the act.

Robert Mitchum also did a cover of “Sunny”. He was mentioned in the episode as a manly man actor by Richard Benjamin who played Jerry, a producer interested in Mickey Donovan’s (Jon Voight) screenplay. Voight and Benjamin were both in the 1970 film Catch-22.

Jerry was all gung ho to make 3 movies with Mickey until Alan (Paul Michael Glaser, best known as Dave Starsky of the 70s detective series Starsky and Hutch) showed up at the cocktail party. Alan is the current husband of Claudette, the love of Mickey’s life, and stepfather to Mickey’s son, Daryll. But Alan came to the party with another woman, and got nasty with Mickey. After Alan disrespected Claudette and threw a drink in Mickey’s face, it was all downhill and the picture deal was off.

Let’s not forget that Mickey now knows that Alan steps out on Claudette and Daryll hates Alan. So that could somehow be a way for Mickey to get back with Claudette, if not on good terms with Daryll. It was not a total loss for Mickey all the same since he stole about $12K worth of fine silver from Jerry’s house. How much can you fence that for?

And we also want to know who owns the rights to Marvin and Bridget’s cover of “Sunny” now? That’s got to be worth a lot more than that silver.
