Ray Donovan Recap: Mister Lucky

Lordy, some heavy stuff went down in “Mister Lucky” (Ray Donovan S5 E9 10-8-2017) that wasn’t very lucky for some people, and there were some big surprises. First of all, Vicky Delgatti is alive. She wasn’t killed in that car crash in “Shabbos Goy,” however dead she may have looked to us.

We picked up right after Ray punched Terry off the stool after Terry told Ray that he was the one who helped Abby make her earthly exit. Terry got up and told Ray that he was the only one who had the guts to tell him the truth. He said what happened was Abby’s choice, and it was Ray’s fault that Bridget ran away to New York and Conor is joining the Marines. Terry said “I love you, Raymond,” but Ray is pushing all of them away.

Ray began to hallucinate that he was seeing Abby and followed her down the street until he was standing on Marilyn Monroe’s star. He kicked some garbage off it when a nearby young male hooker hit on him; “Want some company?” Ray was drunk as hell and just stared at the kid, who looked a bit worried for a minute there. Just then, Ray got a call from Sam Winslow telling him that her stepson George took off with the infamous box. (Yeah, we know. Sam Winslow can throw millions of dollars at blackmailers like its candy, but she doesn’t seem to have the sense to put her problem box in a safe). Ray hung up on her, turned around, gave the kid a big bill to keep the garbage off Monroe’s star and staggered away.

Some peeps on a motorcycle took a picture of Ray as he approached his high-rise. Up in his bedroom, he thought the Marilyn Monroe picture was asking him what the eff he was doing and that woke up his bedmate, Natalie James. The next morning, after swilling down a little hair of the dog, Ray blew off a call from Lena and went out on the balcony. A freshly showered Natalie came out and commented that sad people like them shouldn’t live so high up. Lena called again. This time Ray took it and she told him to turn on Stalkerazzi. There was Marty Grossman giving the red hot scoop on Natalie being holed up with Ray and the rumor is she has “a bun in the oven.” Watching the same broadcast at a bar is none other than Natalie’s ex-husband, Rob. He had the dog that he and Natalie quarreled over earlier in the season with him. The bartender told Rob that he has no idea who “Dave Donovan” is but he’s one lucky m-f. Rob put the dog on top of the bar and walked out. The bartender tried to catch up with him to no avail.

Ray meantime, bat in hand, caught up with Marty Grossman in his car. Ray proceeded to wreak havoc on Marty’s expensive vehicle until Marty gave up his source: Vicky Delgatti. Sam Winslow called up again and Ray said he would find George. Lena was tasked with actually doing that, getting Vicky’s address and getting rid of the photographers outside of Ray’s place. Ray drove Natalie to the studio. She mused that perhaps they could go on a date now that the world knows about them. “I’ll see ya later,” Ray said curtly. Spotting Mickey and Daryll entering the studio, Ray called Frank Barnes to complain about their broken deal. He had to leave a message that Frank will never get.

Lena located George and told Ray to find him at The Fist. Ray found himself in a sex club, listening to some more of George’s movie star tidbits. He told Ray that he would make a great James Bond and how Cary Grant was bisexual. All Ray wanted to know is where the box was but George rambled on and reached out to caress Ray’s face. Ray slapped his hand away and put enough pressure on it to make George very uncomfortable but still unwilling to spill the beans. Ray noticed that one of the members of the floor show was the kid he told to take care of Monroe’s star. (He was so drunk though, how could he even remember?). Ray told George they were leaving and took him to where Sam Winslow was having lunch.

By then, Ray knew that Vicky Delgatti had the box. George claimed that Vicky tricked him and Sam told him to wait in her office. Sam asked Ray to find out from Vicky who she was working for. A short scene followed where Terry dropped off the keys to the gym with Natalie at Ray’s place. When he left, Rob was shown outside in his car drinking and watching Ray’s building.

When Vicky came home, Ray was waiting. He incapacitated her and injected some stuff in her butt that put her in pain and unable to talk. He said he would make it stop if she told him who she is working for and brought her a red marker and paper. Vicky wrote L-A-N on Ray’s shirt. Ray called Sam with that news and she told him she would take care of Doug Landry. Ray should go home and play with his movie star. Ray went home to find the area around his place cordoned off with a group of onlookers behind the police tape. Rob’s bloody body was on the ground and the paramedics were covering it up. Ray rushed upstairs and found Natalie in his bed, strangled.

Frank Barnes Post-Mortem

Mickey and Daryll disposed of Frank Barnes’ remains in the same way that Sensei Shoota was sent to a watery grave, only Frank wasn’t cut up and Mickey said “he was a big man.” (Michael McGrady’s IMDB profile says he is 6’3″) When Daryll finally got the weighted down body in a position where it would slide down off the boat into the water, off it went and Mickey said: “Rest in peace, you prick.” During this tremendous chore, Daryll got a call from “Triple A” — Antoine A’Shawn Anderson, the screenwriter Jay White hired. They arranged a meeting.

The next day, father and son went to the studio (spotted by Ray) and Mickey was not down with “Four Leaf” becoming “Mister Lucky” starring Jay White, screenplay by Antoine and produced by Daryll, not even for $100,000. Daryll told Antoine to tell Jay it was a go, that he would handle his father. Out in the car, Mickey told Daryll that Jay White ought to remember that 70% of his audience is white and Daryll ought to remember that he is 50% white. Daryll soothed his ruffled feathers by breaking out some cocaine and he made arrangements to celebrate with some of the hookers he and Mickey use to run. They were told there would be no further contact with Jay White, but unbeknownst to Daryll, Mickey called Jay White up and threatened him: do “Four Leaf” or else. Jay White and his lawyer met with Assistant D.A. Jackson Holt (the man who said he knows all about the Donovans). Wow! Do you see where this is going? Jay White tells them where they can find what’s left of the sensei and when they go looking, they find Frank Barnes.

Bridget came back to L.A. just in time to find her uncle and grandfather in the midst of a coke-fueled orgy with the ladies of the night. Presumably, she is seeking help for her boyfriend, Smitty, whose condition has deteriorated to the point where he thinks there are spiders in his brain and he saw his dead father telling him everything’s going to be okay. Wherever this is going, we think it’s going to involve that kid at The Fist. He’s about the same age as Smitty. They even look alike to an extent. A perfect donor– of what we don’t know yet.

Bunchy and Dime Bag’s Quest

Dime Bag was overjoyed that Bunchy bailed him out of county and assured him that it would be easy to get the money back from Freddy. He bought a Ronald Reagan mask with Bunchy’s $10 while Bunchy wore his El Trebol mask and they went to Freddy’s house. Freddy’s son recognized Dime Bag by his sneakers and voice right away. Freddy’s wife, Misha, informed them that her man was with his W-H-O-R-E, an old woman named Destiny. Dime Bag said her husband was in the state hospital and her whole place reeks of “bad juju” but Bunchy was adamant. At Destiny’s, they found Bunchy’s money all out in the open on a table and Freddy with two bullet holes in his chest, dead as a doornail. Destiny’s husband, Acid Man, wasn’t in the state hospital after all. As they were stuffing the stacks of bills in the bag, he came down the stairs in his underwear, and began shooting at them. They scrambled out of the house and ran to the car. Bunchy was shot in the right front shoulder area. As they drove away, Dime Bag was shot in the head through the back window. Bunchy threw him out of the car and drove to Abby’s bar.

Terry was there having a drink. He just threw a bottle at the Horses picture that Abby loved when Bunchy came in and said he couldn’t go to the hospital. They had to find another way to deal with his gunshot wound.
