Netherlands Battles U.S. to a Draw in Women’s World Cup

Lindsay Horan scored a goal in the 62nd minute of the United States’ match with the Netherlands and the defending Women’s World Cup champion escaped with a 1-1 draw. The match was played in Wellington, New Zealand. It was the end of the U.S. 13 game winning streak in World Cup action.

This was a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final, won by the U.S. Jill Roord put the Netherlands on top with a goal in the 17th minute. Both the U.S. and the Netherlands have a win and a draw in Group E (4 points) with Portugal next with three points with a win and a loss. Vietnam has two losses. In the final matches of Group play, the U.S. will play Portugal on August 1st. The top two finishers in Group E will advance to the knockout stage, with the top Group E team playing the second place team from Group G, and the second place Group E team playing the top Group G team. Group G includes Sweden, Italy, Argentina, and South Africa.
