Golden Tempo Goes from Last to First to Win Kentucky Derby

Golden Tempo was a 23-1 shot at the start of the 152nd Kentucky Derby, and that looked about right after the horse was in last place early on in the race. But the race is 1 ¼ miles long and Golden Temple used all of it in a spectacular come from behind victory by about a foot over Renegade, a 5-1 favorite. Ocelli, a real long shot at 70-1, finished third.

Trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first woman ever to train a Kentucky Derby winner. She is just the 18th woman train a horse that ran in the Derby; and the second to train a winner of a Triple Crown race. Jena Antonucci trained 2023 Belmont winner Arcangelo. Jockey Jose Ortiz was also a first time winner of the Derby.
