Tiz The Law Wins Belmont Stakes as Out of Order Triple Crown Begins

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, horse racing’s Triple Crown is all messed up this year, with the Belmont Stakes running first on June 20th, followed by the Kentucky Derby on September 5th, and the Preakness Stakes on October 5th. There were no fans in the stands at Belmont Park in New York for the Belmont Stakes (and the rest of the races at the track on the 20th), but the race was run for a TV audience looking for any live sports.

Tiz The Law, ridden by Manny Franco (in his first Belmont Stakes) and a 4-5 favorite, won by four lengths over second place Dr. Post, with Max Player third. The winning time was 1:46.53; the race had been shortened from 1 1/2 miles to 1 1/8 miles. Tiz The Law is a New York bred horse, and the victory broke a long streak of horses from somewhere other than New York winning the race. The last New York horse to win Belmont in his home state was Forester–in 1882.
