Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/26/2023) in the category “Publications” was:

We’re not sure if it was “ancient” or not, but the first U.S. flyby of Venus was by this space probe in 1962 show

Michalle finished in the lead with $4,400. Ollie was second with $2,800. David was last with $2,400. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: American Islands – In the Corporate Arena – You Could Put an Eye Out – Medicine & History – Translate the Britishism – Sailing the 3 Cs

David found the first Daily Double in “You Could Put an Eye Out” under the $800 clue with 5 clues left. He was in last place with $6,000, $9,600 less than Ollie’s lead. David bet $2,000 and said shotput. That was WRONG.

On the very next pick, David got the last Daily Double in “American Islands” under the $1,200 clue. He was in last place with $5,000, $10,600 less than Ollie’s lead. David bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Ollie finished in the lead with $15,600. Michalle was second with $13,200 and David was last with $7,000. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS (or Book of World Records)

“Our Story” on Guinness World Records’ website relates how the book was conceived by Sir Hugh Beaver, Managing Director of the Guinness Brewery. At a shooting party, an argument over the fastest European game bird could not be settled when no reference book contained the answer. In 1954, fact-finding twin brothers, Norris and Ross McWhirter (1925—75) were recruited to compile a book that would be the go-to source to settle these types of arguments.

My initial reaction to today’s Final Jeopardy! clue was to name the book with World in the title. Upon checking, I found other titles without World in them. Later, when I re-read the clue, I wondered if just “Guinness” would have been acceptable. I believe so! After all, the clue says “bearing this name”, not title.

David got it right. He added $5,802 to his score to finish with $12,802.

Michalle also got it right. Her $13,000 bet brought her up to $26,200.

Ollie went with College Bowl. (He must have thought the Guinness book was older.) He lost $12,000 and finished with $3,600. That made Michalle this week’s second finalist.

David, for talking betting strategy, certainly didn’t follow it. That made his interview blurb seem kinda empty.

I was hoping for Ollie. Oh well!

Not sure what to make of this group. Their scores were good, but David was extremely indecisive choosing his meek DD wagers and picking the next clue. I had to chuckle at the thought of a 300-foot shot put toss. There was really only one legit answer to that one.

A rare occasion when I thought all 3 DDs and FJ were easy. “Ancient” was practically a giveaway, and I thought Brit Ollie would know FJ for sure.

Thought one of them would know the leper colony island. The “wagon is a-comin'” hint went right over their heads. (I saw that musical a year ago on Broadway, but saw the movie 60 years ago. But knew the arena name anyway, as any card-carrying sports nut would!)

Yeah, I said something about 3 people never seeing that musical at the time. “(Ya Got) Trouble” is my favorite song.

      • Howard says:

I have it on a Broadway CD which got transferred onto my iPod. That was the role of a lifetime for Robert Preston, with a capital P. Hugh Jackman was excellent, though, last year.
