Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Novels (9-17-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (9/17/2018) in the category “20th Century Novels” was:

“I’ve killed my brother” is said near the end of this 1952 book with a biblical title & a plot echoing a biblical story

3x champ Kyle Jones, a music teacher from Aurora, CO, won $58,800 last week. It’s Game 4 and he is up against: Christine O’Donnell, a philanthropic advisor from Elmwood Park, NJ; and Reese Wallace, an editor from Orlando, FL. Will Kyle be the one to break the leader curse?

Round 1 Categories: Lettuce Begin – A Bit O’ Brit Lit – Show Boats – Compan”ee”s – Regional Vocabulary – State Songs

Kyle found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State Songs” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick of the round. At $1,200, he was the only one with any money after answering the first 3 clues. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT, naturally– it was his own state song!

“In its fair western home, may the columbine bloom till our great mountain rivers run dry.” show

Kyle finished in the lead with $8,800. Christine was second with $3,600 and Reese was last with $3,200.

Round 2 Categories: Specific General History – Mammals – Rhyming Terms Starting With “H” – Stripes on the Flag – Just for Reference – Reinstate Songs

Christine found the first Daily Double in “Specific General History” under the $1,200 clue on the 3rd pick. She was in second place with $4,400 now, $4,000 less than Kyle’s lead. She bet $1,000 and took a guess with Patton. That was WRONG.

Known by a “colorful” nickname, he got the rank of General of the Armies of the U.S. in 1919. show

Reese found the last Daily Double in “Stripes on the Flag” under the $800 clue on the 11th pick. In third place with $3,200, he had $8,400 less than Kyle’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Stripes were added for Vermont & Kentucky, so the star-spangled banner that flew over Fort McHenry had this many. show

Kyle finished in the lead with $17,600. Reese was next with $12,400 and Christine was in third place with $9,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “EAST OF EDEN”?

John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel “East of Eden” is well known for its Cain and Abel symbolism. There are actually two cases of it involved with the Trask family: first between Adam and Charles Trask, two brothers growing up in Connecticut; and later, in California, between Adam’s twins, Aron and Cal– or are they Charles’ kids? Their mother, Cathy, married Adam but drugged him and slept with Charles on her wedding night.

Take a look at John Steinbeck’s bibliography on Nobel Prize.org. He wrote the screenplay to “Viva Zapata!” the same year he published “East of Eden.” Jeopardy! has had a couple of clues about the screenplay. Here’s one of them from 2011: AUTHORS IN HOLLYWOOD ($1200) After scripting “The Pearl” & “The Red Pony”, he wrote “Viva Zapata!” for Brando

Christine chose another Steinbeck novel with a biblical title “The Grapes of Wrath.” She lost her $8,998 bet and was left with $2.00.

Reese wrote down “Cain and Abel,” the brothers the book was based on. He bet and lost it all.

Kyle got it right. He bet $7,201 so he won the game with $24,801. At last, we have another 4-day winner. Kyle’s total winnings now: $83,601. Yay!

Final Jeopardy (9/17/2018) Kyle Jones, Christine O'Donnell, Reese Wallace

Here are 2 triple stumpers from the last round:

SPECIFIC GENERAL HISTORY ($2000) He said overseeing writing of the war history in Europe in 1945 was like being an “undertaker at my own funeral”; it wasn’t far off

REINSTATE SONGS ($2000) “Got him back in my arms again, so satisfied”, sang this trio in a 1965 chart-topper

2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Authors”

In 1948 he wrote he had an idea for a novel in which 2 guys hitchhike to Calif. “in search of something they don’t really find”. show

Did anybody get a Philly audition invite?

  2. John Christian Ambion says:

YES! FINALLY! We have a 4-time champion! Has anyone READ the book or WATCHED the film version of it?

    • VJ says:

yeah, I read the book and saw the 1950s one with James Dean and I saw the 1980s mini-series with Jane Seymour, my favorite. Great cast.

Note to Rhonda – idk what I was thinking this morning. Julie Harris was Abra in the James Dean one. Karen Allen played her in the mini-series.

    • Deidra says:

      LOVE LOVE LOVE the book!

  3. William Weyser says:

Finally, we have a 4-time champion! YES! Congratulations, Kyle!

  4. VJ says:

I never would have predicted that result for FJ.

I always loved that “Back in My Arms Again” song because Diana Ross sings the other girls’ names in the lyrics

“How can Mary tell me what to do
when she lost her love so true
    And Flo, she don’t know
Cause the boy she loves is a Romeo”

Yes, JJ, did you see that one of my very pretty relatives was featured in the Mammals category?

      • VJ says:

Wait till he sees the current episode of Shameless. Bunnies are in that too! It’s getting to be like a Stealers Wheel song

Hares to the left of me
        Bunnies to the right
and here I am…. stuck in the middle with you!

        • rhonda says:

I love it, VJ! I can’t wait to hear what he thinks of the current episode! He might need an extra appointment with his therapist this week lol.

      • JJ says:

@ rhonda – No, I didn’t see the pic of the pika until this AM, thx to VJ’s link. Last night was trivia @ the restaurant so I recorded J!, but have yet to watch it. (And yes, pika’s are adorable, just like MOST of their close, longer-eared cousins!)
@ VJ – There’s no need to change the lyrics to the Stealers Wheel song, darlin’… “CLOWNS to the left of me, JOKERS to the right” works brilliantly as is! 😎
@ Both – It is weird that I DO feel like I’m being stalked by rabbits lately! On my drive to work in the AM, most of the 10 to 15 mile commute offers a view of the many marshes we have locally and I’ve noticed a HUGE number of marsh bunnies recently… WAY more than usual! (And they’re really cute, too!) And as a possible ominous sign, there is a category on tonight’s J! board re “Books”. I may have been a little too bold w/ my selection of John Updike this week?! 😖

        • rhonda says:

I shall try not to be offended by your MOST comment, Grape Nut! I know you weren’t referring to moi!
By any chance, do you ever notice any of my squirrel buddies, too? I do have a group of squirrels that I feed that I call the “clowns” lol. They tumble down the tree one after another when they see me with my peanuts.

  5. Lou says:

At long last after Ryan Fenster won his 7 games back in july, Kyle Jones finally breaks the leader curse early at the start of this season last week. Although I have to give credit to Christine and Reese for trying here in final jeopardy today, VJ. Still great play by all the contestants. And I was hoping for a triple solve today but still with what happened last week, I certainly hope Kyle has what it takes to get a streak going. Also, one question, the title East of eden, does it look similar to the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve were in after they were told not to eat the tree with the poisonous fruit? Plus, Kyle seems to have broadened his knowledge a bit further with the way he is playing, so that would mean Rick Terpstra is also off the toc list for now.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, in the Bible, east of Eden refers to the Land of Nod where Cain was exiled after he killed his brother. The Steinbeck novel is set in the United States, mainly in the Salinas Valley, California (that’s “Eden”).

  6. John B./I. says:

Congratulations to Kyle who just knocked Kate off. Next on the brink of elimination is now Jeffrey. He will probably root for Kyle to keep winning till the cutoff date of the ToC or only 1 or 2 game winners…..Kind of disappointed by only 1 correct though. Kyle is a shoo-in at #8 at the moment. Christine and Reese were at least in the ballpark. Still 7 three game winners left, so we will see some of them in the ToC.
