Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS LEO TOLSTOY?

Strangely enough, if you search the Nominations Archive on nobelprize.org, you’ll find that Tolstoy was not even nominated for the 1901 Nobel Prize in Literature. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize! The “apology” letter was written a month after the first literature Nobel went to French poet, René “Sully” Prudhomme. On nobelprize.org, the full sentence reads: “In specific, we see in your person not only the most revered patriarch of today’s literature, but also for us the greatest and most profound poet who, in our opinion, should have been the first to be thought of, even if you yourself never strove for this sort of reward.”

Tolstoy was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in each year from 1902 to 1906, as well as two more times for the Peace Prize (1902, 1910) but never won in either category. According to Russiapedia, Tolstoy found out somehow that he was nominated in 1906 and made an effort to get the nomination withdrawn.

Rodrigo had Camus (born in 1913). He lost everything but $1.00.

Laura got it right. Her $8,000 bet brought her up to $16,800.

Jason went with Goethe (died in 1832). He lost his $10,000 bet but still won the game with the remaining $24,400. His 12-day total is $356,643.

Oh, only Laura got it right, but Jason’s incorrect response ALMOST knocked him out. Did all three players have to guess which author existed in which year? I guess this makes it very difficult.

Nobel was misspelled as Noble on screen when the clue appeared during the think music

Congrats to Jason, a 12 day champion with $356,643. He now ties Seth Wilson and Austin Rogers with 12 wins.

  4. VJ says:

Wow, I was kinda figuring that would happen to Jason one of these days, now that he’s betting big in FJ because he’s like the Hotstepper (money to burn, baby, all of the time)… LOL!!

Anyhow, congrats to him on another runaway and to Laura for getting FJ right. Besides Prudhomme, I only knew two of the other nominees for that 1901 Nobel Literature prize — Emile Zola and Frederic Mistral. That year, Prudhomme nominated Louis Pasteur’s son-in-law, René Vallery-Radot, whose claim to fame was a Pasteur biography. (He doesn’t even have a page on English wikipedia). The next year, at least one of the fellows who signed the apology letter nominated Tolstoy.

  6. Lou says:

Well I can say that today’s final jeopardy kind of threw Jason off track a bit but we are actually talking about the author of war and peace. But still though glad Laura got this. I looked up goethe and he hasn’t been nominated for his poetry works VJ. I found out that he has been honoured with Lowenstein from Richard wagner after goethe died. Just out of curiosity had camus been honored with Tchaikovsky’s music when he wrote his works of literature?

Congratulations to Jason once again on his 12th victory. He is now the third biggest winner just ahead of seth Wilson and behind Austin Rogers.
