Final Jeopardy: Vice Presidents (8-14-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (8/14/2020) in the category “Vice Presidents” was:

He was the only vice president to be elected to, & serve, 2 full terms as president

It’s the last match of the 2002 Million Dollar Masters Tournament 2-day final that originally aired on 5/14/2002 and featured the three finalists: Brad Rutter, a network administrator from Lancaster, PA; Eric Newhouse, a director of technical assistance from Vermillion, SD; and Bob Verini, a film journalist and test prep teacher from Los Angeles, CA.

Round 1 Categories: Mother’s Day – Top O’ the Charts – Gulfs – What Possessed Them? – Business & Industry – “U”2

Eric found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Gulfs” under the $600 clue on the 14th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $2,200 at this point, $800 more than Brad in second place. He bet $2,200 and he was RIGHT.

This gulf, also called the Gulf of Bac Bo, had a 1964 congressional resolution named for it. show

Eric finished in the lead with $7,200. Brad was second with $5,600 and Bob was last with $2,800.

Round 2 Categories: World Literature – Circus & Carnival Cinema – U.S. Cities – They’ve Been Benched – History Hodgepodge – 4-Syllable Words

Bob found the first Daily Double in “They’ve Been Benched” under the $1,600 clue on the 18th pick. He was in the lead with $15,200 now, $3,200 more than Eric in second place. He bet $5,200 and thought it was William Howard Taft. To the surprise of many, that was WRONG.

He resigned from the Supreme Court in 1916 to run for president & was reappointed in 1930 as chief justice. show

Bob got the last Daily Double in “4-Syllable Words” under the $1,200 clue, with 6 clues left after it. In third place with $10,400, he had $2,000 less than Brad’s lead. He bet the whole $10,400 and drew a blank so that was WRONG. Quite a disaster for Bob but he got a big round of applause for his chutzpah.

This adjective referring to a reversal of common sense comes from the Latin for “before behind” show

Brad finished in the lead with $13,600. Eric was next with $12,800 and Bob was in third place with $400.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS THOMAS JEFFERSON?

Thomas Jefferson served as the second Vice President of the USA under John Adams. He was elected President in 1800 and reelected 4 years later. Another unique statistic belongs to Richard Nixon who was elected twice but resigned before completing his second term.

These 3 men were elected President after serving as Vice President but served only one term: John Adams, Martin Van Buren and George H.W. Bush.

These 9 men succeeded to the presidency while serving as VP: John Tyler (W.H. Harrison death, 1841); Millard Fillmore (Zachary Taylor’s death, 1850), Chester A. Arthur (Garfield’s assassination, 1881); Teddy Roosevelt (McKinley’s assassination, 1901); Calvin Coolidge (Harding’s death, 1923); Harry Truman (FDR’s death, 1945); LBJ (Kennedy’s assassination: 1963). They were then elected and served a full term. Andrew Johnson only completed Lincoln’s second term and Gerald Ford completed Nixon’s second term.

Bob doubled his score to $800. His $6,800 from the previous game brought him up to $7,600.

Eric doubled his score to $25,600. He had nothing to add so that was his final score.

Brad bet $201, bringing him up to $13,801 plus $11,800 from Game 1. He finished with $25,601 and became a millionaire. Eric won $100,000 and Bob won $50,000.

Wow, what a game! Though this game happened many years ago, it was still horrible to watch Bob go up in flames like that. He was full of enthusiasm leading up to that first DD. Oh well.

    • VJ says:

Yes, Cece, to go from the lead to zero that fast. Ouch!

P.S. I’m not sure if you saw the link I left you the other day to that Ken Jennings commercial

      • Cece says:

Yes, the bf’s mère saw it and showed it to me (actually she shoved the laptop on my face saying “regarde ça !”), lol. Thanks, VJ.

BTW, she was impressed that you like Trenet 🙂

        • VJ says:

That is so funny, Cece! lol. Anyhow, that Ken/Brooke shtick where he tries to impress her and she’s like “yawn” is cute.

Wow, j’aime aussi Georges Brassens BEAUCOUP, Jacques Brel and that one who sings “Natalie” (can’t remember his name right now), I hope she likes them, too.

        • Cece says:

She likes them all! And shows it, sometimes all day long. Her son sometimes threatens to play Zero 7, if she doesn’t stop (she hates them)..

  2. Lou says:

Those daily doubles were not in Bob’s favor but congrats to brad on winning a million dollars. This was a great competition and worth watching.

  3. Richard Corliss says:

    Bob, darn those Daily Doubles.
