Final Jeopardy: Knowledge by the Numbers (8-12-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (8/12/2020) in the category “Knowledge by the Numbers” was:

Number of males who served as British PM in the 1990s plus Oscars won by Tom Hanks plus protons in a helium nucleus

Today we’re watching a rerun of the last semi-final of the 2002 Million Dollar Masters Tournament that originally aired on 5/10/2002 and featured: Chuck Forrest, a lawyer and CEO from London, UK; Bob Verini, a film journalist and test prep teacher from Los Angeles, CA; and Claudia Perry, a sports copy editor from Jersey City, NJ.

Round 1 Categories: Those Darn Etruscans – People – So You Want to Be a 19th Century Heroine – Central Park – This Category Stinks! – Abbreviated States

Claudia found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “This Category Stinks!” under the $800 clue, with 9 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $3,400, $400 more than Chuck in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was close, but WRONG.

Chuck finished in the lead with $3,800. Bob was second with $2,400 and Claudia was last with $1,400.

Round 2 Categories: Colonial Arts – International Cuisine – We Are the Champions – Religion – Problems, Problems – “EN” the Beginning

Claudia found the first Daily Double in “We Are the Champions” under the $1,600 clue on the 12th pick. She was in third place with $4,600 now, $1,000 less than Bob’s lead. She bet $1,200 and she was RIGHT.

Claudia got the last Daily Double in “Religion” under the $2,000 clue, with 5 clues left after it. In the lead with $13,400, she had $3,000 more than Bob in second place. She bet $4,000. I don’t really know what she said. The closed caption had “Enlock.” Possibly, she meant Enoch. Whatever it was, it was WRONG.

Bob finished in the lead with $12,400. Chuck was next with $10,600 and Claudia was in third place with $9,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SIX?

As Alex said: “There was Tony Blair and John Major; Tom Hanks won two Oscars and helium, atomic number 2. Six is right.”

Tom Hanks’ Best Actor Oscar-winning roles were as Forrest Gump in the 1994 film of the same name and Andrew Beckett in “Philadelphia” (1993). Today, the answer to this clue would be the same. In February of this year, Hanks was up for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” (2019), but he did not win.

Claudia wrote down eight. She bet and lost everything.

Chuck got it right. He bet everything and doubled his score to $21,200.

Bob got it right but was acting like he didn’t bet enough. Psych!! His $8,801 bet was enough by $1.00 so he won the game and joins Eric Newhouse and Brad Rutter in the 2 final matches.

Final Jeopardy (8/12/2020) Chuck Forrest, Bob Verini, Claudia Perry

A triple stumper from the first round:

THOSE DARN ETRUSCANS ($1000) A 1927 visit to Etruscan sites inspired this author of “The Plumed Serpent” to write “Etruscan Places”

Fun Fact: Before we know who wins this tournament & $1,000,000. 2 Players: Brad Rutter & Bob Verini won 1 Tournament, and both times, it was the Tournament Of Champions. Brad Rutter in 2001 & Bob Verini in 1987, while 1 Player: Eric Newhouse won 2 Tournaments: The 1989 Teen Tournament & The 1998 Teen Reunion Tournament.

Damn FJ! I could only come up with 1 of the films, 1 of the PMs. Yeah, I got the 2 protons. Meh.

I thought Chuck had won that game (by reputation). I was nicely surprised to watch Bob’s performance.

  3. Lou says:

This should be an exciting two day final. Pretty stiff competition so far and chuck almost had a spot in the finals. Someone could win big in the finals and it all depends on Bob, Eric and Brad. Why did claudia choose eight in the final? Unless she miscalculated something?

    • Richard Corliss says:

Well, Claudia chose eight because she didn’t know much about awards.

      • Howard says:

Maybe she DID know Hanks won two Oscars, but didn’t know the other two factors.
And she scribbled her answer at the last moment.
Some may disagree, but I would call her the most annoying contestant ever. Her exuberance is over-the-top.
