Final Jeopardy: Pulitzer-Prize Winning Books (8-11-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (8/11/2020) in the category “Pulitzer-Prize Winning Books” was:

One of its title studies is Sen. Edmund Ross’ 1868 vote against convicting President Andrew Johnson

Today we’re watching a rerun of the second semi-final of the 2002 Million Dollar Masters Tournament that originally aired on 5/9/2002 and featured: Brad Rutter, a network administrator from Lancaster, PA; Leslie Frates, a Spanish teacher from Hayward, CA; and India Cooper, an actor and copy editor from New York City, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Lesser-Known Names – Pop Music – U.S. Bodies of Water – “P”S & “Q”S – Saints – Sinners

India found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Saints” under the $600 clue, with 2 clues left after it. She was in second place with $2,600, $7,000 less than Brad’s lead. She bet $2,000 and thought it was Timothy. That was WRONG.

Brad finished in the lead with $9,600. Leslie was second with $4,200 and India was last with $600.

Round 2 Categories: Chemistry – Anagrammed Names – Switzerland – Million – Dollar – Masters

Brad found the first Daily Double in “Switzerland” under the $2,000 clue on the 15th pick. He was in the lead with $14,400 now, $6,200 more than Leslie in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

4 clues later, Leslie got the last Daily Double in “Masters” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $9,400, she had $8,200 less than Brad’s lead. She bet $9,000 and she was RIGHT and in the lead!

Van Gogh & Kandinsky were in this modern art “Show” named for the NYC military building where it was held in 1913. show

This was the last clue that cost Brad his $1,200 lead over Leslie going into Final Jeopardy! Brad got the Warren part right but ran out of time before he could get to Baxter. (It would not be the last time those two names tripped contestants up! Check out FJ! on 1/10/2018.)

ANAGRAMMED NAMES ($2000) Baxter & Buffett

Leslie finished in the lead with $20,400. Brad was next with $19,600 and India was in third place with $3,800.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “PROFILES IN COURAGE”?

Andrew Johnson was impeached by the House of Representatives on 2/24/1868, for allegedly violating the 1867 Tenure of Office Act by dismissing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Six Republicans voted to acquit Johnson and the deciding vote fell to Republican Senator Edmund Ross of Kansas. Constitution Daily says: “… for all purposes, he was expected to vote against Johnson, up until the night before the final roll call. The chamber was stunned when Ross said “Not guilty.”

John F. Kennedy’s “Profiles in Courage” takes the position that Ross bravely followed his conscience. The article outlines other far less noble motives that have been attributed to Ross.

India didn’t bet anything. She remained at $3,800.

Brad bet it all and doubled his score to $39,200.

Leslie didn’t bet anything, to everyone’s shock. Whatever her reasoning, she handed the second finalist spot to Brad. She had to know Brad would bet it all!!

Final Jeopardy (8/11/2020) Brad Rutter, Leslie Frates, India Cooper

A triple stumper from the each round:

“P”s & “Q”s ($1000) In Mexico the juice of certain agaves is used to make this milky fermented drink

CHEMISTRY ($2000) This “point” doesn’t mean someone’s being judgmental–it’s where liquid & gaseous phases become identical

So Leslie bet $9,000 on a DD and zip, zilch, zero in FJ…What the…?

So, Brad could’ve been defeated before the GOAT competition.

    • VJ says:

Yes! And that is in stark contrast to his Battle of the Decades match on 3/7/2014, where he got a lock game on the very last clue of Double Jeopardy! The video of the category is on this weekly recap.

Very lucky for him since he got FJ! wrong.

      • Cece says:

I remember that game, VJ! Wow. Thanks for the link though; it’s good to revisit it

        • VJ says:

You’re welcome, Cece. You know, what else was funny? When Brad got that Switzerland DD right today, he said it was “pure luck.” He most certainly has had his share of good luck. Well… at least up until the GOAT Tournament 🤣🤣

        • Cece says:

Indeed. I rooted for Ken as the GOAT because to me, it takes one to have the mental and physical stamina for a 75-game run. Not to mention the knowledge. And he was the only one who did it after the 5-game lift.

        • VJ says:

Well, Ken was obviously determined to win that GOAT tournament. Did you ever see that Master Minds commercial with Ken and Brooke Burns where he tells her he’s not a Beast but he is a GOAT? So funny!

        • Cece says:

Haha, that’s hilarious! No, I’ve never seen that commercial (or watched Masterminds).

        • VJ says:

Here’s a link to the commercial

idk if you were reading the recaps, but the Game Show Network has the 6/2/2020 game on YouTube

  2. William Weyser says:

I’m sure that Leslie was hoping that Brad would miss, but you can’t do that. You have to take the destiny in your hands. You have to count on your nearest opponent to get it right, and wager everything. If that player is successful, you have to wager to beat them by $1.

  3. Dave says:

What in the world just happened?! You bet nothing?! What?! How?! What a come back! So much momentum! What in the world just happened?!

  4. Thomas says:

I dont understand why she didn’t bet anything going into final jeopardy, which cost her the game!

  5. Lou says:

Brad was pretty dominant throughout the whole game here. Looks like he could continue that streak in the finals. Furthermore I would have loved to see Leslie in the final spot if she bet everything, and maybe just maybe she could have a shot at the million.
