Final Jeopardy: Movie Appearances (10-14-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/14/2020) in the category “Movie Appearances” was:

Not an actor, this man who died in 2018 appeared briefly in some 40 mainly action films with a combined $30 bil. worldwide gross

4x champ, Kevin Walsh, a story analyst originally from Williamstown, NJ, is up to $81,700 and could go over the $100K mark in Game 5. Today, his opponents are: Elaine Zatarain, a patient care coordinator from San Diego, CA; and Jack Mooney, an aerospace engineer from Santa Cruz, CA.

Round 1 Categories: OK, Boomerang – It’s a Fact – Holidays & Observances – 2-Word TV Titles – Which Country’s Forest? – Contronyms

Jack found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Holidays & Observances” under the $600 clue, with 7 clues to go after it. He was in the lead with $3,600, twice as much as Kevin and Elaine, who were tied in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and said spring break which was in the clue, so that was WRONG.

April 22 was chosen for this observance because it fell between spring break & final exams. show

Elaine finished in the lead with $2,400. Kevin was second with $2,200 and Jack was last with $800.

Round 2 Categories: Pic-Pourri – Scientists – Sweden Lows–& Highs – African-American Writers – ’80s & ’90s Hit Parade – Making a 4 “A”

Jack found the first Daily Double in “Scientists” under the $800 clue on the second pick. He was in third place with $1,200 now, half of Elaine’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Galileo mistakenly concluded that these were caused by the orbit of the earth & not the proximity of the moon & sun. show

6 clues later, Jack landed on the last Daily Double in “Making a 4 ‘A'” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $4,000, he had $3,400 less than Kevin’s lead. He bet $2,000 and came up with grand poobah. That was WRONG.

This royal title is from Sanskrit words meaning “great king” show

Kevin finished in the lead with $18,600. Elaine was next with $14,800 and Jack was in third place with $2,000. Both boards were completed today.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS STAN LEE?

GamesRadar.com has “Every Stan Lee cameo from X-Men to Avengers: Endgame” and says: “The man behind some of your favourite comic book characters and big screen icons, Stan Lee, sadly passed away in November 2018, but his memory lives on not just in our minds, but in every Stan Lee cameo to appear in the history of Marvel movies to date. The man has showed up everywhere, and though Avengers: Endgame represents his final blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, he won’t be forgotten.” They have images of the cameos AND— it’s not a slideshow!

Jack didn’t have a response. He lost his $1,999 bet and had $1.00 left.

Elaine got it right. She bet $14,000, bringing her up to $28,800.

Kevin got it, too. He bet $11,001 and won the game with $29,601. Kevin’s 5-day total is $111,301. “You’re gonna come back in the Tournament of Champions,” Alex said, “but you’re gonna come back tomorrow also, aren’t you?” Kevin said “sure.”

Incredible comeback by Elaine, who was a mere spectator the entire first segment. I speculated that she might go the whole show without answering a clue. She pushed Kevin to the limit and had a chance to win a bundle.

Years ago, there was a player, Richard something I think, who did absolutely nothing the first round, then won something like 5X. So you never know.

A few “easy-peasys” left on the table tonight. Earth Day (DD); Dakotas; Canada (Fundy forest); England (Epping forest); oversight. But a good performance overall. Bold move by Jack to go all in for a big lead on that Earth Day DD. That’s how you try to beat a strong champion.

  3. Richard Corliss says:

Jack couldn’t get any rhythm going today. Kevin and Elaine seem to be so much faster on the button. Also, I start by saying “Darn those Daily Doubles”.

  4. Craig Johnson says:

If a person has lines in a movie they are considered an actor. Disagree with this question/answer.

    • JP says:

I don’t think someone must necessarily be considered an actor by virtue of having a couple lines in one movie. However, when you have 124 acting credits on IMDB, that’s another story.

A counterargument would be that in his Wikipedia article, among his many descriptions (“comic book writer, editor, publisher, and producer”), “actor” is absent. I think that gives the Jeopardy producers enough cover to claim the wording was fair, although I think it could have been worded better to remove the ambiguity.

  5. Jacob Ska says:

So happy for Kevin and his 5th win. Congratulations champ. Well deserved.

  6. William Weyser says:

This is my 1st time saying this for Season 37. Kevin Walsh, welcome to the Tournament of Champions.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

Congrats to Kevin Walsh for his fifth game, which means he is now qualified for the Tournament of Champions. Hey VJ, do you know what Alex said in the intro when Kevin Walsh was by himself in FJ! yesterday?

    • VJ says:

@Kevin Cheng, after saying that Kevin was the first player this season in a position to automatically qualify for the ToC, Alex said: “In the two games so far this week, he has been dynamite. Two games that were runaways. Yesterday he eliminated both his opponents. He was the only one in Final Jeopardy!”

Hardly true. 🤣🤣🤣 His opponents eliminated themselves.

  8. Lou says:

At last the dry spell of leader curses has been broken and we now have a new streaker in Kevin Walsh for season 37. The last time we had that happen was when Gilbert Collins, Rachel Lindgren and Alan Dunn also made big comebacks.

If I remember correctly grand poobah is a haughty character derived from that comic Mikado from Gilbert and Sullivan, VJ. Are you familiar with it? Jack couldn’t get anything going today and misread a part of the clue in the first daily double. Also a Fred Flintstone episode had them being grand poobahs. And I don’t think Jack ever heard of farah, daughter of the Maharaja in Prince of persia sands of time.

Congrats to Kevin on his fifth win.
