Final Jeopardy: Historic Names (7-27-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (7/27/2020) in the category “Historic Names” was:

For his licentious behavior, monk Grigori Yefimovich Novykh earned this nickname meaning “debauched one”

Today we’re watching a rerun of the first Celebrity Jeopardy! match that originally aired on 10/26/1992 and featured: Carol Burnett, star of stage, screen and television; Donna Mills, who portrayed Abby on the long-running prime time soap, “Knots Landing”; and Regis Philbin, co-host of “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee”.

As many of you already know, sadly, Regis Philbin passed away on Friday, July 24, 2020. Rest in peace, Regis.

Round 1 Categories: European History – Italian Food – Women in Sports – Fashion Designers – Actors on Stage – U.S. States

Regis found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Fashon Designers” under the $300 clue on the 19th pick of the round. He was in third place with $800, $300 less than Carol’s lead. He bet $400 and thought it was “Women’s Wear Daily”. That was WRONG.

Before he became a couturier, Mainbocher edited the Paris edition of this U.S. fashion magazine. show

Carol finished in the lead with $2,000. Donna was second with $1,000 and Regis was last with $900. 4 clues went uncovered in Women in Sports.

Round 2 Categories: General Science – Song Standards – Dance – Hobbies – Shakespeare – Old Movies

Regis found the first Daily Double in “Song Standards” under the $800 clue on the 9th pick. He was in second place with $2,700 now, $2,300 less than Carol’s lead. He only bet $700 but he got it RIGHT.

It’s the question asked in “I Got Rhythm” show

The last Daily Double went by the wayside when 14 clues (!) went uncovered in this round

Carol finished in the lead with $5,200. Regis was next with $3,800 and Donna was in third place with $2,100.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS RASPUTIN?

According to Etymology Online, Rasputin was the “acquired name (Russian, literally “debauchee”) of Grigory Yefimovich Novykh (c. 1872-1916), mystic and faith healer who held sway over court of Nicholas II of Russia. His nickname is from his doctrine of “rebirth through sin,” that true holy communion must be preceded by immersion in sin. His name used figuratively in English from 1937 for anyone felt to have an insidious and corrupting influence.”

Be that as it may, I also saw a couple of places that say something different. Alpha History says “As a teenager, Novykh became a self-declared mystic and began calling himself Rasputin, a name taken from the confluence of two rivers near his hometown.” A book called “Hitler’s Mentor” says “the name Rasputin means “between two rivers.”

Donna wrote down “Don Juan”, a fictional character who was not a monk. She bet and lost it all.

Regis didn’t write anyone down. “The only one I can think of was Dan Quayle,” he quipped, “but I don’t know.” He lost his $1,500 bet and was left with $2,300.

Carol went with the Marquis de Sade, a real person but, again, not a monk. She bet $2,300 and won the game with $2,900.

Their scores were all raised to $10,000 and given to the following charities: Carol: amfAR; Donna: Earth Communications Office (ECO); Regis: Cardinal Hayes High School

I just flipped to this episode and was like “What year was this?” and this was the first result that came up =P

We will not forget Regis philbin but still this episode is actually a good tribute to him. He has lived a great life. The last time we saw him was when he guided jimmy Kimmel through the who wants to be a millionaire game hosting. Anyway low scores today though I thought they knew about Rasputin.

They did not since it was a triple stumper.

As Alex said, they were misled by the word “nickname” in the clue. Apparently, they thought that was his real last name. They should have focused on the word “monk” — there was a 1966 movie called “Rasputin, the Mad Monk” starring Christopher Lee. Being in the entertainment business, that must have been a real head slapper after the fact.
