WHAT IS TAIPEI?

Per a 2022 Times of India article, “In what is a source of frustration to many Taiwanese, the world has long heard them announced as coming from ‘Chinese Taipei’ in major sporting events.” Taipei is the capital city of Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy located on an island officially known as the Republic of China (ROC). It was formed in 1949, after the Chinese Civil War ended with the Communists gaining control of mainland China. The Communist People’s Republic of China (PRC) has never recognized Taiwan as a separate nation and, to this day, the PRC uses its power to prevent Taiwan from achieving international recognition. Today, less than 15 countries recognize Taiwan.

That is the core of the conflict over the name that Taiwanese sports teams can use. In 1981, “Chinese Taipei” was settled on as the name Taiwan could use without presenting itself as a sovereign nation. Additionally, Taiwanese Olympic athletes must compete under the Plum Blossom Banner rather than their national flag and Taiwan’s national anthem cannot be played. Recent criticism has been voiced as to the unfairness of the compromise when, for example, Palestine gets to use its name and flag.

Erin wrote down Pittsburgh. She bet zero, standing pat on $7,000.

Justin got it right. He bet $5,501 and finished with $14,701.

James came up with Serbia & and an almost complete Montenegro. He lost $4,000 and landed in second place with $11,000. That made Justin White the new Jeopardy! champion.

Pretty darn good game, IMO the overall clues were a bit easier tonight. Thought for sure Justin would know the “B” Russian immigrant composer.
Props to him for getting FJ; I thought of it with about 4 seconds to go.
Not sure I understood his wager, though. $6K would have locked out Erin if she’d doubled and put him past James if he’d wagered zero.

I guessed right on the Bradbury books and knew Andy Roddick’s wife.
(Andy was the last American man to win a grand slam tennis tournament., in 2003.) Someone should have known King Tut’s archaeologist and the authority on card games.

Usually, I got about 3/4 of the TS. The Egypt guy was a total gimme.

I also got FJ, but, unlike Howard, with only 1 second left!

Of COURSE, had I gotten that audio DD, I would have said “Israel Baline” (and still been correct!).

I was so rooting for Erin. Very charismatic and warm, she was. I wonder if there’s a bit of a hunch at the podium, as she isn’t the first I’ve seen with arms akimbo at the end of the match.

But, I was correct in my prediction – James was “one and done”!

When Justin got the Audio DD, he didn’t have a response after the musical band audio fades out. He could’ve responded while the audio’s playing in the background.

That Cartoon Critter clue about the fastest mouse in Mexico made me think of this old Pat Boone song and now I’ve got a 7-letter word for “a melody you can’t get out of your head”

    • Rick says:

I recalled that amazing critter right away as I had watched those cartoons regularly years ago.

      • VJ says:

They’ve had 2 clues that mentioned his cousin. Here’s the last one from 2010:

THINGS ARE SLOW ($1200) Slowpoke Rodriguez, “the slowest mouse in all Mexico”, was his cousin

    • Howard says:

Although I occasionally hear that song on Sirius XM or my iPod, by current PC standards, it’s considered racist. “Ahab the Arab” is another one.
Both songs are fun to listen to, though.

For the second time this season, we have an audio daily double. We usually don’t see an audio daily double that often.
