Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/9/2020) in the category “Pre-Civil War Presidents” was:

Encyclopedia Britannica says of him: “After an extended tour of Europe he retired to Concord…& he died in obscurity”

Morgan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “History of Hungary” under the $600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $2,600, $2,200 more than Zach in second place. He bet $100 and he was RIGHT.

For centuries, Hungary was on the frontline of Christian Europe’s battles with Eastern invaders; the Mongols came through in the 1200s and this Empire occupied much of the country from 1541 to 1699. show

That proved to be the last clue they got to and Zach finished in the lead with $9,400. Morgan didn’t get a crack at regaining the lead and was in second place with $8,900. Shelli was in third place with $2,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS FRANKLIN PIERCE?

Here is the entire sentence from Brittanica: “After an extended tour of Europe he retired to Concord. Always a heavy drinker, Pierce descended further into apparent alcoholism, and he died in obscurity.” Actually, after he left office on 3/5/1857, Franklin Pierce and his wife, Jane, toured Europe for 2 years. Jane was suffering from tuberculosis and they hoped that a change of climate would help her. After their return to their native New Hampshire, her condition grew steadily worse and she died on 12/2/1863.

Six years later, Franklin Pierce succumbed to cirrhosis of the liver on 10/8/1869. By Executive Order, then President Ulysses S. Grant declared a 30-day mourning period.

Shelli went with John Quincy Adams. (At least I wasn’t the only one who thought Massachusetts!) She lost her $200 bet and finished with $2,600.

Morgan got it right. He bet $1,208 and finished with $10,108.

Zach got it, too. He bet $8,401 and won the game with $17,801. Zach Newkirk is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (6/9/2020) Morgan Wilbanks, Shelli Castor, Zach Newkirk

2 triple stumpers from MARQUEE “MOON”:

($400) 1987, a winner of 3 Oscars, though not for Nicolas Cage

Paul Trifiletti is the last 5-time champion of season 36.

Speaking of Zach, his ”Man In The Moon/Man On The Moon” confusion reminds me of 1 contestant back in 2006 named John Ward, who said ”The Daring Young Man In The Flying Trapeze”, and got dinged for saying ”In”, instead of ”On”, and Christine Black picked up the rebound by correctly responding with ”The Daring Young Man On The Flying Trapeze”. Either way, I have never heard of that title before, until that day. As for ”Man On The Moon”, I have heard of that movie before, but I’ve never seen it.

    • VJ says:

I first heard “The Man on the Flying Trapeze” in a Popeye cartoon

    • Howard says:

“Man on the Moon” is a very good film. It’s the story of the last days of comedian Andy Kaufman, and his desperate attempt to overcome his cancer. REM also recorded a song with that same name, also with Andy as the subject.

  3. rhonda says:

Yet another coincidence today, VJ, Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman came up in this morning’s Sporcle quiz.

    • VJ says:

I saw that, too, Rhonda! I said: Ha ha!! That’s the second time I got that right today! (I had to take that quiz this morning because the forward button would not work last night).

$10,800 in Triple Stumpers(including the missed DD) and an FJ! get means a win from the fourth podium

  5. JP says:

Looks like the contestants studied up on US presidents. Most presidents after the Founding Fathers are so obscure because the presidency had so little power until Theodore Roosevelt started to massively expand the scope of the executive branch.

  6. William Weyser says:

This is the 3rd time in a row where a 3-Time Champion is doable, but it just didn’t happen. Will it happen with Zach? We’ll find out tomorrow.
