Final Jeopardy: Places of Lore (6-28-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (6/28/2019) in the category “Places of Lore” was:

The first mention of this locale is in Chrétien De Troyes’ 12th century poem “Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart”

It’s the final game of the 2019 Teen Tournament. Here are the finalists and their scores from yesterday: Avi Gupta, a senior from Portland, OR ($24,200); Lucas Miner, a junior from Miami, FL ($14,800); and Ryan Presler, an 8th grader from Sioux Falls, SD ($15,999). Those scores will be added to today’s scores to determine the $100,000 winner.

Round 1 Categories: Taking the Driving Test – Art Supplies… – Newer Words & Phrases – Hangouts – Finish the Classic American Lyric – “P”laces on the Map

Lucas found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘P’laces on the Map” under the $600 clue on the 17th pick of the round. He was in third place with $400, $6,600 less than Avi’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance and guessed “Pearl Desert”. That was WRONG.

Lt. Joseph Ives gave this name to a brilliantly colored Arizona desert, now partly within Petrified Forest National Park. show

Avi finished in the lead with $8,400. Lucas and Ryan were tied in second place at $3,000 each.

Round 2 Categories: Poeteens – Rocks & Minerals – International Sports – It’s Time for Time – Explorers – Drop a Letter

Avi found the first Daily Double in “Time for Time” under the $2,000 clue on the 5th pick. He was in the lead with $7,600 at this point, $4,600 more than Lucas and Ryan, still tied. Things weren’t going so hot in this category, so he only bet $1,000. As luck would have it, he was RIGHT.

Jet lag is a disruption in these rhythms of the body, from Latin words for “about the day”. show

Ryan found the last Daily Double in “Explorers” under the $1,600 clue, with 10 clues left after it. In second place with $8,200, he had $3,600 less than Avi’s lead. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

He set sail from England in December 1577 & completed his circumnavigation of the world on Sept. 26, 1580. show

Avi finished in the lead with $18,200. Ryan was next with $17,400 and Lucas was in third place with $4,600.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS CAMELOT?

There’s a free translation of Chretien de Troyes’ “Lancelot” online, complied by Hero of Camelot.com. Chrétien wrote (Verse 31) “Upon a certain Ascension Day King Arthur had come from Caerleon, and had held a very magnificent court at Camelot as was fitting on such a day.” It is the first known mention of Camelot, which Chrétien suggested was in South Wales. Historic U.K.’s site has the 4 top contenders for the location of Camelot. They note that the first mention of King Arthur came from Geoffrey of Monmouth, who also suggested Caerleon as the site of Arthur’s chief court. Other sites in the running: Cadbury Castle, Somerset; Tintagel Castle, Cornwall; Winchester Castle, Hampshire.

From 1988: ACTORS & ACTRESSES ($200) Of Richard Burton, Julie Andrews or Robert Goulet, the one who won a Tony for “Camelot”

Lucas bet it all and doubled his score. He finished with $9,200 to add to yesterday’s $14,800. His 2-day total is $24,000.

Ryan bet $9,002 bet to finish with $26,401 today. Yesterday, he had $15,999. His 2-day total is $42,401.

Avi bet $8,400. That brought him up to $26,600. Adding in his $24,200 from yesterday gave Avi a 2-day total of $50,800 and he won the Grand Prize of $100,000.

The runner-up prizes are not shabby by any means: Ryan will be taking home $50,000 and Lucas won $25,000.

Anyone think of “now those skies are threatening” for the lyrics that follows “O beautiful for spacious skies”? (Don Henley/Bruce Hornsby End of the Innocence)

@VJ, Here’s a Quote of the Day for you to add to FF:

“Facts are the building blocks of all opinions and all beliefs and for that reason, I think it’s really important to know them.”
-Avi Gupta, Jeopardy Teen Tournament champion June 28, 2019.

I thought that statement was prolific coming from a teenager. Smart young man in more ways than one. He sounded like an old philosopher.

Enjoyed the final show tonight. Great efforts by all 3 of you. Congrats Avi…you rock!

Congratulations, Avi on winning the Teen Tournament, and I don’t want to say this, but I hate it when a player who is just too intimidating for me wins in the end. Ryan & Lucas, you 2 were great, but Avi intimidated you a little bit. Remember when I said that in the 2 All-Female Finals, both of my picks won, and in the 3 All-Male Finals, none of my picks won? Yes, well things haven’t changed. I was hoping that would change if my pick: Ryan Presler won the tournament, but I ran into tough luck again. Also, a different situation happened in the 2009 & 2011 Teen Tournaments. In the 2009 Teen Tournament, the finalists were 2 boys: Aidan Mehigan & Will Dantzler, and 1 girl: Rachel Rothenberg, and I did not want Rachel to win, because she was way too intimidating for me, and I wanted Will to win. If only things worked out for Will in the end, he would have won, but instead, Rachel won, and I got very upset.
In the 2011 Teen Tournament Finals, the finalists were 2 girls: Raya Elias-Pushett & Kailyn LaPorte, and 1 boy: Raynell Cooper, and I wanted Raynell to win, because at least 1 of the girls was intimidating me, and Raynell got lucky in Final Jeopardy!, because after he got Final Jeopardy! right, and wagered everything, Kailyn also got Final Jeopardy! right, but didn’t wager enough to cover him, if he wagered everything, and Raya got Final Jeopardy! wrong, and would not have won, because she didn’t wager enough to cover either Raynell or Kailyn. So, Raynell Cooper won the 2011 Teen Tournament. The good news is that I was happy that Raynell won the Teen Tournament. The bad news is that sadly for me, this was the last time that I picked a male to win a Teen Tournament, and that EXACT male won it. I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME WHEN IT COMES TO THIS! Also, as for this season, I’m 2 for 4 on picking rooting interests to win tournaments, and yes, it is a Ping Pong Back And Forth Pattern.

  5. Charles Brown says:

Second place for an 8th grader. Congrats

    • William Weyser says:

I kinda wish that JEOPARDY! would do a ”Grade 8-9 Version” of the Teen Tournament in the future. Why? There hasn’t been an 8th Grader or a Freshman to win the Teen Tournament. It’s always won by either a sophomore, junior or senior. How many sophomores have won the Teen Tournament? 4. How many juniors have won the Teen Tournament? 10. How many seniors have won the Teen Tournament? 18. That’s way too many. Especially, when the underdogs need to have a chance, but the seniors keep on intimidating them, and I don’t like that.

Watching jeopardy right now surprised the results were already posted before the show was over.

Think of the people on the west coast who won’t see Jeopardy until 10 pm or 10:30 pm est. Now they can really complain. All of the news media will have published the game results by the time they see it and not just Jeopardy specific sites.

Congratulations Avi, Ryan, & Lucas. Fantastic finale. Congratulations to all of the teen tournament participants. All of you were great.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

What a tournament, super performance to all 15 contestants. That should make Alec Fischthal happy if he was up against those guys.

  9. VJ says:

Congrats to all 3 finalists. I was happy Ryan made it to second place. Actually, congrats to all the teens in the whole tournament. It was a tough and well-played competition throughout.

Congrats to avi on winning 100K for the 2019 teen tournament. Time to get back regular games and finish up season 35. Speaking of camelot, do you remember the pc game last knight at camelot VJ? It features the knight Lancelot and the wizard Merlin. A great play by the gentlemen today.

Congratulations to Avi who won the 2019 Teen Tournament, the second Teen Tournament went well like the first Teen Tournament. On Monday, we’re back to regular games.
