WHO IS GEORGE WALLACE?

On 9/14/1963, at 10:22 a.m., a bomb exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Four young girls were killed and a fifth lost an eye. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. sent a telegram to George Wallace, who was Alabama’s governor and a virulent racist. Earlier in June, Wallace had tried to block the University of Alabama’s integration by standing in front of the door. President Kennedy had to get the Alabama National Guard out to force Wallace to leave. Wallace had the power to help achieve integration peacefully but instead incited violence with the “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever” stance that he later said he had not intended to say.

In 1972, Wallace became a victim of violence himself when Arthur Bremer attempted to assassinate him in Maryland. Paralyzed from the waist down, Wallace spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. In 1979, Wallace admitted that he was guilty of contributing to racial unrest and asked the black community’s forgiveness.

Sarah had J. Edgar Hoover. She lost $7,000 and finished with $1,000.

Stefany went with JFK. That cost her $2,000 and left her with $8,600.

Dan also had JFK. He lost $5,201 and won the game with $$10,799. Dan Hopkins is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Having lived through that entire decade, I thought the church bombing might have been in Birmingham, so I quickly went with Wallace and let it go. Nice run by Dan after his early woes on “Monster Mash.” They left a few goodies on the table: 1901 Commonwealth, rock family, Canadian province.

Sarah’s guess of “Gettysburg Address” on the Lincoln clue was lame, as that was made 17 months before his assassination, not 42 days.

Dan wagered $5201, not $5200 in Final. I thought Stefany might go bigger, like $5401 to lock out Sarah and win the game if she nailed FJ and Dan erred. He was more or less obligated to bet $5201.

When I saw this clue this morning, my mind went straight to that state’s governor without even realizing the state wasn’t in the clue!

Perhaps the results would have been better if the state or city was in the clue.

And we get the triple stumper in the final since it was tough and the streak where we have a triple stumper in the final at least once a week continues.
