WHAT IS A SECURITY BLANKET?

The third definition that The Phrase Finder gives for security blanket is “all-encompassing military and political security measures.” They go on to explain that the term actually originated in the 1920s, long before WWII, and originally referred to “a form of harness for a baby’s crib.” They trace the definition that we are most familiar in connection with “Peanuts” character Linus to the year 1956, pointing out that it had already been used 2 years earlier by a staff writer for a California newspaper.

Vicki thought it might be “brainwash.” She lost her $3,800 bet and finished with $1,000.

Alexandra wrote down “secret agent.” She lost $2,201, leaving her with $5,199.

Francois came up with “warm puppy.” He bet nothing, having already won the semi-final spot with $20,600.

Reversal: The Elements ($1000) “This element precedes carbonate in a compound used to treat gastric ulcers & is definitely some of your…” – They were looking for bismuth, riffing off “none of your business.” The judges decided that was a bit too cute and gave Vicki a thumbs up and $2,000 on her “calcium” response.

Wow, a very BAD and TOUGH Final Jeopardy that caused Vicki to eliminate from contention, and so is Tara. What a dismal FJ, where the two women wasn’t enough to beat Francois. If Francois wins the 2019 TT, he would be James Holzhauer’s biggest threat since Adam Levin.

  2. Matthew Larsen says:

just thinking….. is teachers field of competition weaker than normal jeopardy? wouldn’t it have to be because there are less teachers? I thought Francois looked nervous on DD’s

  3. Albert says:

That was a tough and bad Final Question, imo. Does anybody think Holzhauer would have answered the Final correctly?

    • Lou says:

I would definitely think he could have gotten this one, Albert. No doubt about it. And I thought we had some teacher’s who can get better scores here tonight but this week had some disappointing wild card scores due to nervousness of the teacher’s.

    • VJ says:

Albert, I do wish they had that Final in one of his games. I don’t know if he would have known it, but if so, it would have been a hoot..

I suppose you’re supposed to focus on the word psychological in the clue, not the war part, but I think that would lead most people to a dead end at Lucy’s psychiatry booth: “The Doctor Is In”

  4. Lou says:

Well francois had some faltering with the daily doubles but still, I thought that the contestants should have known about Mavis beacon teaches typing software. I know I’ve used it way before I moved. Also VJ and John have you guys watched or read the peanuts comics? They should have known this one as well. Also did your kids ever play kids typing or jumpstart typing?

  5. VJ says:

All I know is naming a secret project “warm puppy” would give me a lot more happiness than naming it “security blanket” lol. Great answer!

Alexandra & Vicki had rough time today against Francois who was at the top of his game. That’s unfortunate.
