WHO IS FERDINAND MAGELLAN?

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer who, in 1519, led a Spanish expedition in search of favorable trade routes. They sailed west across the Atlantic, rounding South America in 1520 via the strait now bearing Magellan’s name. Magellan reached the Philippines in 1521, where he set about trading with the natives and converting them to Christianity.

Lapulapu, chief of Mactan island, was not on board with Magellan’s agenda. An angry Magellan ordered an attack on the natives. That went badly, especially for Magellan who died on the beach, while his crew ran back to the ships. João Lopes de Carvalho took over for Magellan but was replaced with Juan Sebastian Elcano who took what was left of the expedition back to Spain.

Here’s a link to a very creative song about Magellan produced by the Kto12 YouTube channel to help teachers in the Philippines. There are also some videos that recreate the Battle of Mactan.

Amy thought it was Attila the Hun who died in Hungary in 453. She lost $2,500 and finished with $3,700.

Josh went with Cook, who was killed in Hawaii on Valentine’s Day in 1779. Josh lost $2,201, hanging on to $9,999.

Adriana started out with Cook, but switched to Magellan. (Whew!) She added $11,000, winning the game with $25,400. Adriana’s 3-day total is $71,600.

I got all 3 DD and FJ., and about half the TS. Hey, I’ll take it!

It’s kinda funny that the last time James Cook was the Final Jeopardy! response (November 8, 2023), Magellan was one of the wrong replies, even though the clue had 1774 in it. People seemingly mix those two up more than you might think despite the 2 century difference. 😲

Impressive finish, and worthy challengers. I felt confident it was Cook.
Adriana a very strong player. I loved that sixties category! That DD about burning the object was tricky. I do remember some people doing that. When I turned 18, my dorm director registered me for the draft. Second DD was a mystery to me. 1936 was key on the third, and Josh barely got it in. Same with Adriana on “J’accuse.”

Disappointed no one knew the black cavalry unit. The noisy outburst blank and blank was tough, but I remembered the synonym for color, and the rest was easy. The $1000 fruit clue was fairly obvious.

I place the blame on the media for contestants not knowing about the black cavalry unit. All of the attention focuses on the Tuskegee Airmen which is certainly deserving but little attention is given to the black cavalry unit. I like it when “J’accuse” pops up as a clue which isn’t frequently enough imo.

I also went with Captain James Cook in FJ, but I don’t think it was a bad guess at all. Anyways, it was another great game!

  5. VJ says:

I wasn’t surprised that none of them got the cemetery reference to Dodge, although watching a few episodes of Gunsmoke would have taken care of that. 🤣🤣🤣

It looked like Adriana was headed for another runaway but Josh sure put his foot on the gas pedal in Round 2. I can understand how he felt the need for caution on the second DD that he got. Ultimately, it made no difference since he didn’t know the FJ! answer.
