WHO IS LOUIS PASTEUR?
In 1863, At the behest of France’s Emperor Napoleon III, Louis Pasteur commenced research on wine to determine what was converting it into vinegar. Pasteur, then in his early 40s, was already a respected chemist. Through his research, he proved that a fungus was causing the problem. In 1866, he published his findings on fermentation in “Etudes sur le vin” (Studies on Wine), and 2 years later published “Etudes sur le vinaigre” (Studies on Vinegar).
Did you notice the similarity between “vin” and “vinaigre”? Vinaigre means “sour wine” in French. That’s how vinegar got its name.
