Final Jeopardy: Geographic Terms (5-24-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/24/2018) in the category “Geographic Terms” was:

For a link between oceans, the U.S. signed an 1859 treaty with Mexico giving us rights to this 2-syllable strip of land “of Tehuantepec”

6x champ Josh Hill, a network engineer from Arkansas, is at the head of the 2018 ToC list with $144,120 now. In Game 7, he is up against: Kristen Krikorian, a marketing director from Pennsylvania; and Tom Campo, a project manager from Massachusetts.

Round 1 Categories: Audible Recent Fiction – Raisin d’Etre – World Capital Attractions – What’s the Difference? – TV Animal Roundup – Fake Clues

Tom found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Fake Clues” under the $400 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was tied in second place with Josh. At $600, they had $2,000 less than Kristen’s lead. He went for the $1,000 allowance and thought it was a myth. That was WRONG.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS AN ISTHMUS?

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico is the shortest distance between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. Before the Panama Canal came along, it was used as a major shipping route. Oscar J. Martínez writes in “Troublesome Border” (2006) that, in the 1850s, the USA made attempts to acquire Mexican territory whenever it “perceived a weakness in the Mexican regime in power.”

During the Mexican War of Reform in 1859, Pres. James Buchanan recognized the Juárez government and negotiated the McLane-Ocampo Treaty which would have immediately put $2 million in Mexico’s hands and granted the U.S. “perpetual transit rights in Tehuantepec and across northern Mexico,” among other things. “Although highly favorable to the United States, the treaty met with defeat in the U.S. Senate. Since the treaty was discussed in executive session, it is not known precisely why the Senate rejected it, but apparently the possibility that slavery would be extended into northern Mexico motivated many to vote against it.”

Tom had “islet.” He bet the farm and finished with zero.

Kristen got it right. She bet $9,001, bringing her up to $18,801.

Josh got it right, too. He bet $8,201 so he won the match (much to his obvious relief) with $19,601. His 7-day total is $163,721.

    @Jacob
    Of course you would have to insist on the brand “Pushkin” for the vodka part….. and now I’m “joked out” for at least a month!

    For a minute there I thought Kristen was going to put an end to Josh’s winning streak, but still Josh came out on top just like how Tim Aten did in one of his games making a comeback at the end. Congrats once again Josh. Can he prevail with number 8 and hopefully get to Buzzy Cohen’s total? Plus VJ were you actually worried about Josh nearly defeated though?

    • VJ says:

      Nah, Lou, Josh is already ToC-qualified so I’m fine with him losing whenever. To be honest, I was rooting for Kristen today. She played great.

      I think that Josh has a photographic memory — the way he pulled out that De Beers answer and the Five Dollars made me think he was visualizing an advertisement for the first and an image of the bill on the second.

      Back in the day when we used address books, l found myself stuck several times where I had to make an emergency call and did not have the book with me –I would visualize the page the person’s number was on and I was able to make the call!
