Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/23/2019) in the category “Jazz Classics” was:

In one account, this song began as directions written out for composer Billy Strayhorn to Duke Ellington’s home in Harlem

Nate found the first Daily Double in “Science” under the $2,000 clue on the 4th pick. He was in the lead with $13,400 now, $6,800 more than James in second place. (We’ve got us a game now, folks!) He bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT.

James finished in the lead with $31,200. Nate was next with $25,800 and Laura was in third place with $1,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “TAKE THE A TRAIN”?

Songfacts has a lot of trivia on the signature song of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, including how Duke Ellington met Billy Strayhorn and the events leading up to getting directions to Ellington’s home in the wealthy Sugar Hill neighborhood of Harlem. Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington are both Songwriter Hall of Fame inductees.

This was a clue in Ryan Fenster’s 5th game on 2/2/2018 (the one he lost and then got to come back in July because of a clue snafu): BILLY ($1600) Billy Strayhorn’s lifetime collaboration with this legend led to hits like “Chelsea Bridge” & “Take the ‘A’ Train”

Laura wrote down “Take 5” (the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s signature song). With a zero bet, she stayed at $1,200.

Nate got it right. He bet $10,000, bringing him up to $35,800.

James was trying to fake everyone out with worried looks but he got it, too. He bet $20,908 and won the game with $52,108. His 26-day total is $1,991,135.

    I would bet $20,401

  2. Elan says:

James Holzhauer got the final jeopardy right 20 days in a row.

  3. Cece says:

Oh, Nate! Why oh why? You had nothing to lose by going all in on that 2nd DD. Sheesh.

  4. John Christian Ambion says:

Wowie, the same situation as the one with Adam Levin, but the challenger wagered only $10,000. Had Nate wagered it all, he must’ve wagered at least $20,400. I thought it’s game over for James, given that Nate found the first two DD, but not for long. Tomorrow, it’s the 8000th episode of Jeopardy! and I think he will make it past $2 million.

  5. Albert says:

Did anybody else notice that “ART” is not a strong category for James?

  6. Richard Corliss says:

It seems like that I’ve noticed that James’s hairstyle almost looks like Ryder’s hairstyle from the PAW Patrol.

  7. JP says:

Makes one wonder if end-of-filming-day fatigue may have contributed to the below-average performance by James. A close game tomorrow would really point in that direction. Although there has not been much indication of that in previous weeks.

    • VJ says:

@JP, I think that was more of a case of Nate being a lot quicker on that buzzer than James expected 😀

  8. aaaa says:

If Nate had wagered $5401 (he left $7400 on the table on the DD) more on the second round DD he got correctly, it would have been bye bye James, assuming the rest of the game played the same.

    • Albert says:

The longer James plays the other players will realize that they must bet ALL their money on the Daily Doubles in order to beat James. That is really the only way. People can’t be timid and conservative facing James.

  9. William Weyser says:

It’s 25x champ James Holzhauer, and his 26-day total is $1,991,135.

  10. Lou says:

Laura couldn’t get anything going today as the guys were pretty much dominant. I thought James would be dethroned today by nate as the giant killer but unfortunately it didn’t happen. But still a win is a win. I really hope tomorrow James will get the 2 million dollar mark. This game kind of reminds me of how kaya chua tried to dethrone Kerry Greene previously but failed to do so. By the way VJ, are you a fan of duke Ellington or Ella Fitzgerald? Also were you thinking Nate almost became the new champion if James got this wrong?

    • VJ says:

actually, Lou, I really didn’t think James or Nate would get this FJ! wrong considering where they live. But that aside, it sure wasn’t looking too good for James for quite a while there so kudos to Nate for a presenting James with a great challenge — also, the reason that James couldn’t make it to 2 million today.
