WHAT IS “THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON”?

Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel “Robinson Crusoe” was an inspiration to many future novels, poems, films and TV shows. “Der Schweizerische Robinson” was the original German title of what the English-speaking world knows as “The Swiss Family Robinson”. It was written by Johann David Wyss and published by his son Johann Rudolph Wyss in 1812. The German title translates to “The Swiss Robinson”, to imply that the papa in the story was the Swiss equivalent of Robinson Crusoe. The addition of the word “Family” to English translations of the novel led to the assumption that was the family’s last name, even though it’s obviously not a Swiss surname. Then again, who can “Tell”? Their famous folk hero’s last name doesn’t sound Swiss, either, does it?

The House of Switzerland explains why “Heidi” is more popular in Switzerland than “The Swiss Family Robinson”.

Tiffany came up with “Gulliver’s Travels”. She lost her $1,500 bet and finished finished with $3,300.

Jackie thought it might be “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”. That cost him $2,601 and left him with $4,399.

Ben didn’t have a response. He lost $1,042 and won the game with $19,358. His 2-day total is $38,158.

Tough FJ as we got a triple stumper.

  2. Lou says:

Congrats to ben on his second win. Jackie was way off with 20000 leagues under the sea as the event of a sea monster occurred in 1868 during some expedition and has nothing whatsoever related to Swiss family Robinson. Still ben is playing it safe and not risking a lot. So I still think he has a chance to build up his streak.
