Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/8/2019) in the category “Hollywood History” was:
On June 6, 2018 the Chinese Theatre dimmed its lights to honor Jerry Maren, who lived to the greatest age of any of this 1939 group
2x champ James Holzhauer, a pro sports gambler from Las Vegas, NV, won $82,606 last week. In Game 3, he takes on these two players: Maryanne Mowen, an accounting professor from Santa Fe, NM; and Matthew Amster-Burton, a podcast host from Seattle, WA.

Matthew found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Get Your Kicks” under the $600 clue, with a dozen clues left after it. He was in second place with $4,800, $600 less than James in the lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
When he passed away on May 24, 2018, Jerry Maren was the last surviving Munchkin from “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), as well the last surviving cast member with a speaking or singing role. He was the middle member of the singing Lollipop Guild that welcomed Dorothy to the Land of Oz. Dressed in green, Maren handed the lollipop he was holding to Dorothy after the song. At 19, he was also the only Lollipop Guild member not old enough to drink legally. Harry Earles was 36 and Jackie Gerlich was 21.
From 1989: WIZARDS ($400) The munchkins looked up to him, but then they looked up to everybody.
Maryanne got it right. She added $4,000 to her score, bringing her up to $10,000.
Matthew wrote down “Who are the… Nope.” Very funny as Alex often says that when a player is wrong. Matthew lost $5,600, leaving him $12,000.
James got it, too. He bet $7,030 and won this game with $50,845. His 3-day total is $133,451.
A triple stumper from the first round:
GET YOUR KICKS ($400) In 2015 the NFL moved the spot for this kind of kick back to the 15-yard line
ROOT ’66 ($600) Modern auto safety took a big step in ’66 as LBJ signed bills mandating seatbelts & rupture-resistant these

CBS has a lot of explaining to do after allowing him to write his name with a double SS.
[scurrilous accusations deleted]
@Jeff S, Please don’t post accusations like that here. That is your own interpretation and if you have a beef with CBS about it, write to them.
FYI, James has been stylizing a different letter of his name every day (today it is the A).
For what it’s worth, VJ, the stylized S that James used is the S in the Slayer logo.
Thanks for the info.
This must means it’s James’s father’s birthday.
I thought Steven Grade was the great champion, but now, for James Holzhauer, it looks like we have a much greater champion than Steven.
I find James being a pro sports gambler disgusting. I think he is a lazy, immature, spoiled brat who comes from family money. I would have a million times more respect for James if he were a janitor or a cashier at a grocery store. Gambling is a sickness and James will lose ALL his Jeopardy winnings at the casino. James is a complete waste!!!
@Albert, aren’t you conflating professional gambler with degenerate gambler? Professional gamblers do not make bets with money they can’t afford to lose. Otherwise, they could not make a living at it.
Bingo, VJ. Doris addressed the change in attitude earlier. But it seems the profession is still not 100% accepted. Or maybe just jealousy? Phil also got it right with comparing a stockbroker with a”gambler”. Heck, I am still trading and have for over 20 years. There is a “secret” and a required set of qualities to every job. Stockbroker: don’t be greedy, do your research in general and about the company/ies you trade etc….just like a surgeon goes to med school or a lawyer to law school.
I think it’s more misconceptions that people have about gambling than jealousy. Some people firmly believe you have to lose a lot of money before you win anything. Other people believe that if you do win a big prize, you will gamble it all back. Of course, some people fit those descriptions but not everyone.
Same thing with the lottery. I remember a girl telling me once that she believed she would win the Pick-6 if she played the same combo every drawing and she wanted to know if I agreed. I asked her if her combination won the 4 out 6 prize or the 5 out of 6 prize, would she still expect that same set of numbers to come out one day? And she said yes.
@Albert
Funny, I assume you could substitute the profession of stockbroker for professional gambler and say the same.
He ended with the unusual total of 50845, then wrote happy birthday pops. What are the odds that his dad’s birthday is May 8, 1945.
Wait a minute… professional sports gambler James couldn’t answer the Extra Point question?? Lmao 😂😂
@ Joe
I would guess I follow sports more closely than 99% of people, but I didn’t get that correct either. Something about the way the clue was phrased threw me. It looked like James had a similar reaction.
I got a chuckle out of James’ first DD today, only because I typed “xon of Xerxes” instead of “son” — ha ha! silly!
Congrats to James. Another big win. I didn’t think he’d get a runaway today when Matthew was ahead at the end of Round 1. Then I got the Matt Jackson vibes – how Matt wouldn’t move in for the kill till Round 2. But even without those big DD bets, James would have had the lead today, plus he knew FJ. Not a surprise to me.
Props to Maryanne for getting FJ, too. @Albert, she’s an over-50 player.
Also, here’s a link to Matthew’s Spilled Milk podcasts

Wow, I can’t believe Maryanne is 70, no way!!!
It is amazing how attitudes change. If you had said 20 years ago you make your living as a professional gambler, 99%+ would have frowned upon that. But if you are good at math and reading people, body language etc a poker player is a job like any other.
James Holzhauer has the 2nd highest 3-day total in JEOPARDY! History. The highest is Roger Craig with $138,401.
Well, what do you know? I was pretty sure that the lady would get it. That James got it too just proved that he DOES have a wide range of general knowledge. You normally don’t necessarily connect a professional gambler with the munchkins….LOL But it was a runaway, regardless.
CONGRATULATIONS to James. He has won more in three games than any 5 game winner and only the top 6 game winner (Josh Hill) tops him, and of course the 7 game winners. James’ bets at the DDs are , well, WOW. How often can he go to the well or will he bet more cautiously if the category is not to his liking?
This game reminded me of Andrew Pau’s third game where he won 110,000 dollars. But this day belonged to James. If he keeps this up, he could focus on other jobs rather than gambling. Still though the wizard of oz brings a lot of great memories for us. By the way VJ and John do you guys have a favorite scene with the munchkins in the movie? Great play by all the players but still a very funny response from Matt.
