The Final Jeopardy question (4/20/2026) in the category “Mountains” was:

26x champ Jamie Ding, a bureaucrat & law student from Lawrenceville, NJ, has now won $732,000. In Game 27, he’s up against: Caleb Phillips, an account manager from Austin, TX; and Caroline Coughlin, an economic researcher from Somerville, MA.

Is Jamie on his way to beating Cris Pannullo’s $748,286 winnings today, or is he on his way home?

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS JUNGFRAU?

Mount Jungfrau is a Swiss mountain peak in the Bernese Alps. At 13,642 feet, it is the third highest mountain in the Alps, after Mont Blanc (15,771+ feet) and Monte Rosa (15,203 feet). There are actually 9 main peaks in the Bernese Alps but “The Big Three” are Eiger, Mönch and Mount Jungfrau. The legends surrounding their names were attributed to ogres, monks and nuns. Apparently, this was so because of the convents in the area.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bunch of “unfair clue” articles on this Final Jeopardy! “Frau” means woman in German. When it’s prefaced by “Jung”, it means young woman or maiden, and is meant to imply virginity. However, when Johanna Spyri published “Heidi” in 1881, “Frau” referred to married women, whether young or old. In the novel, Heidi grows up from age 5 to 12. She is referred to as a child (kind, in the original German) and “little miss” (Mamsellchen). 12-year-old Klara is sometimes called Fraulein; her grandmother is Frau Sesemann; and the rotten governess is Fraulein Rottenmeier. The closest term to “Jungfrau” in the novel is “Jungfer” (Miss), used when referring to Heidi’s Aunt Dete and a maidservant, Tinette.

Caroline wrote down “Swiss”. She bet and lost her whole $1,800.

Caleb went with Mont Blanc. He stood pat on his $10,000.

Jamie was in the right area but he thought it was the Eiger. He lost $3,000 but won the game with the remaining $21,000. Jamie’s 27-day total is $753,000. That’s $4,714 more than Cris Pannullo won so Jamie is now No. 5 in highest winnings in regular play.

Final Jeopardy (4/20/2026) Jamie Ding, Caleb Phillips, Caroline Coughlin

Reversal: IN ROGET’S THESAURUS ($200) “Covetousness”: this deadly sin – Caleb rang in with “greed,” Caroline said “jealousy” and Jamie tried “avarice.” Ken nixed them all. The judges accepted Caleb’s answer so he got $400. Caroline & Jamie got back $200 each because their responses no longer counted.

A triple stumper from each round:

A WORD FROM THE FOUNDING FATHERS ($1000) This man for whom a Fairfax, Virginia university is named said the slave trade was “disgraceful to mankind”

THE FAMILY IN THE PLOT ($1600) The Clarkes’ marriage is breaking up in this, Roddy Doyle’s Booker Prize-winning novel about their 10-year-old son
