Final Jeopardy: Central American Geography (4-6-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/6/2018) in the category “Central American Geography” was:

One active, one dormant, Madera & Concepcion are volcanoes in this body of water that shares its name with a country.

New champ Kristin Robbins won $36,399 yesterday. In her second game, she is up against these two players: Dominick Fiorentino, from Washington, DC; and Andrews Landsman, from Sherman Oaks, CA.

Round 1 Categories: It’s Got Electrolytes – Ancient Stuff – New to the Oxford English Dictionary – San City, California – Greed, Oh! – Shot First

Kristin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Ancient Stuff” under the $600 clue on the 8th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $2,600, $2,400 more than Andrews in second place. She bet $1,000 and guessed the Roman Senate. That was WRONG.

Kristin finished in the lead with $3,800. Dominick was second with $2,600 and Andrews was last with $1,800.

Round 2 Categories: Vintage Cars With Pedigrees – Their Biggest Billboard Hits – Women Poets – National Rhyme Time – Unusual Animals – IOU “AE”

Andrews found the first Daily Double in “Women Poets” under the $1,200 clue on the 2nd pick. He was tied with Dominick at $2,600 now. They were both trailing Kristin by $1,200. He made it a true Daily Double and missed a cue in the clue so he was WRONG.

Dominick found the last Daily Double in “National Rhyme Time” under the $1,600 clue on the 9th pick. In the lead with $5,000, he had $400 more than Kristin in second place. He bet $2,000 and drew a blank so he was WRONG.

Kristin finished in the lead with a runaway $8,600. Dominick was next with $3,400 and Andrews was in third place with $1,600.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS LAKE NICARAGUA?

Ometepe is an island in Lake Nicaragua formed by the two volcanoes named in the clue. Its name derives from the Nahuatl words “ome” (two) and “tepetl” (mountain). About 30,000 people live on this island and it has become a popular tourist attraction. While the Maderas (aka La Madera) is a dormant volcano, you’ll find all kinds of different dates online for the last eruption of the larger one, Concepción. Volcano Discovery has a list of years it erupted updated through 2015. Volcano Hotspot only goes up to 2014, but they have some really great images on there.

Andrews got it right. He bet $868 and finished with $2,468.

Dominick had the Gulf of Mexico. He lost $199 and was left with $3,201.

Kristin had the Gulf of Honduras. She lost $5, winning her second game with $8,595. Her 2-day total is $44,994. “Kristin, congratulations,” Alex said, “Take the next 2 weeks off.” The College Championship starts on Monday so we won’t be seeing Kristin until April 23rd.

Folks, In the past, I have made (not-so-nice) remarks about J contestants and Central America. To wit: on VJ’s post “Independent Countries with Less than 50,000 People”, I remarked: “Wow, a whole category on Palau and not one TS. And contestants tend to flame out on Central America. Go figure.”

    And there it is. Again.

    • VJ says:

@Cece, I mentioned on Spoiler Talk this morning that sometimes it seems the players neglect to the study this area of the world. It seems so sometimes when you have categories on Central America,, Canada and Mexico. But on this particular clue, it didn’t point to “lakes,” it said “bodies of water” and if you didn’t know about the volcanoes, besides the right response, there’s the Gulf of Honduras and the Gulf of Panama so I didn’t think Kristin’s guess was bad.

      • Cece says:

I hear you VJ, but I have a more pessimistic view about this. Even if the clue had pointed to “lakes”, in which case would have given it away, I still don’t know….

        • Jacob Ska says:

@Cece, I thought about your past comments about contestants & their lack of knowledge about Central America when two of them blew fj.

But will someone “upstairs” help me on the response of Gulf of Mexico? What in the world?

College Championship (April 9-20), Regular Play (April 23-May 4), Teachers Tournament (May 7-18).

It was still a good week on Jeopardy!

  4. Albert says:

I don’t want to be rude, but this was not a strong group tonight. If I were on tonight I would have won. How can people get on the show and not know one of the most famous lines in all of poetry by Emily Dickinson? I also got the FJ.

If only I were on tonight. I could have won. I could have had class. I could have been a contender for the Tournament of Champions. Instead, I’m a bum sitting at my computer looking at pictures of Ashley Graham.

    • VJ says:

Nice Terry Malloy parody, Albert 😀

Yeah, they should know that Dickinson will show up in just about every Women Poets category. I predicted she would be there, EBB and Sylvia Plath. I was glad to be wrong on one of them and see others up there.

      • Louis says:

Andrews didn’t even know Roberta frost? And I thought poetry was going to be a strong subject for the contestants today. Emily Dickenson, how did they miss that? Plus Andrews was just making too many bad guesses and ended up in the negative score. We need a contestant that has strong knowledge of certain subjects, don’t you agree VJ?

        • VJ says:

@Lou, well, Andrews did make it to FJ and he was the only one that got it right. So there’s that. On his DD, I think he either misunderstood the clue or when he hit on Robert Frost, he forgot the last part of the clue

  5. Lou says:

I mean sorry about that I need to ask something else. What happened today with the contestants? I thought they knew the billboard hits or the cars category, VJ?

  6. Lou says:

Well,.Kristin made a wise bet to lose only five dollars. Low winning totals as Andrews couldn’t get any rhythm going today as the clues were too much challenging for any of them to handle.

When was the last time Madera and Concepcion volcanoes erupted?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, check out the links in the info part of recap to find out more on those volcanoes. Idk exactly what happened there, but I guess no one getting their Daily Double didn’t help.

They’d have probably seen all 61 clues today if they’d saved at least one clue of the vintage car Clue Crew category for last, as they like to show all the clues in such video categories.
