TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MT. RAINIER?

At 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier in the State of Washington, is the 10th highest volcano in North America, and the highest in the contiguous United States. British explorer George Vancouver named it for his friend, Peter Rainier, a Royal Navy officer. (Click on the clippings for full-size.)

Almost a century later, according to Cascade PBS: “in 1883 the Northern Pacific railroad, having picked Tacoma as its terminus, announced that it would henceforth refer to Mount Rainier as Mount Tacoma.” Tacoma’s business boosters were gung ho for this change, urging newspaper editors to support the name change and they did for many years, as this 1926 headline shows. However, it officially remained Mount Rainier.

According to Brandon Reynon, the Puyallup tribe’s historic preservation officer, in the Twulshootseed language, Mount Rainier is called təqʷuʔməʔ (pronounced “Taquoma.”) In one translation, that means the mother of all waters. Reynon talked to KIRO7 News in 2021 about the movement to rename Rainier.

Matt couldn’t complete his “Ki” answer. He lost $3,998 and finished with $2.00.

Dan got it right. He bet $10,199 and finished with $20,399.

Amy also got it right. She bet $2,800 and won the game with $20,500. Amy’s 3-day total is $58,195.

I was blown away by Ken’s wit at the end of Double J. The last clue played dealt with Poe’s Raven and one question was not shown. He said (more or less) “that question will be seen, nevermore”. So sharp and done on the spot!

Its not at all relevant, but Amy is adorable, especially when her midwestern accent comes out on certain words.

Incorrect Matt bet on final Jeopardy. He bet $3998 and ended up with &2. The picture underneath shows the correct result.

  3. Howard says:

10 PM start tonight due to NFL draft. Living in the Pacific NW and familiarity with Puyallup made FJ a slam dunk.
All 3 DDs were very knowable, although the first was an either-or one.
Same for the two stumpers in Lawful Quotes.
Matt was up and down all game and couldn’t stay with the others. And his “Let’s go” every time he had control of the board wore very thin. Although he’s certainly not the only player to have done that.

  4. Jason says:

I said to my wife, “it’s either Mt Rainier or Mt St Helens”, and I gambled and lost!

However, I did get 2/3 DD (said John Smith, not Rolfe), and most of the TS.

I do have to ask, though – what exactly is a “democracy entrepreneur”?

    • William says:

Apparently it is someone who wears a t-shirt and sneakers when appearing on national TV.

      • Jason says:

For some reason, I thought the stage on Jeopardy! is cold. If I ever get on, I thought I would wear an aloha shirt (as I essentially do that every day), but figured I’d have to have a blazer over it. Huh.

What’s up with all the triple stumpers on Thursday?
