Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE EQUATOR?

The equator, an imaginary line dissecting the northern and southern hemispheres at 0 degrees latitude, passes through 7 African countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Republic of the Congo, Sao Tome and Principe, Somalia and Uganda. In South America, it passes through Brazil, Columbia and Ecuador, and in Asia, Indonesia. The equator also passes through waters controlled by the Maldives and Kiribati. Some of these countries set up markers at the equator (more or less) so tourists can put one foot on either side of the line. National Geographic has an article with more interesting facts about the equator.

Alyssa knew it but only got as far as “Equat” so she lost her $5,599 bet. That left her with a dollar.

Randy got it right. He bet $4,200 to finish with $20,000 even.

Kate came up with “the center of Africa.” She bet and lost it all so Randy Mathews is the new Jeopardy! champ.

VJ, About Alyssa, I think you mean Waupaca, Wisconsin not Washington?

    • VJ says:

Yes, thanks, Becci. Gee, I hope you guys can bear with me the rest of this week. We are in the process of moving and I’m a bit rattled. So I just want everyone to know I appreciate all the help 🙂

P.S. Becci, I saw your other comment, too and am glad you got to see it.

      • Becci says:

VJ, I live in Washington State (born & raised) & although I couldn’t possibly know every town here, so I googled it & ‘they’ told me it was Wisconsin.

I feel for you, I hate moving.

Maybe it just seemed easy to me because friends of mine and I went in an oooold VW bus from Morocco all the way to Tunisia, after contemplating and studying other routes through Africa. But that was 1972, sort of a final graduation “celebration”. I would not go near some of the places today though…

    • VJ says:

Maybe. I did not think of the response as far-fetched though. She probably thought of the marker as a sign at those locations pointing to another place in Africa

  3. Louis says:

Really? The center of Africa ? That response isn’t even registered in my brain. Had Kate.came up with the equator she would have won. Congrats to Randy. So VJ, what was your opinion on Kate’s performance in today and yesterday? I was certain that she knew this right on the top of her brain. I had no idea why she didn’t get it.

    • John B. says:

      @Louis
You are so right. The center of Africa in 2 different places??

    • VJ says:

I thought Kate was a great player, today and yesterday. Loved her chat story about weeding out suitors who are not okay with weird people with a trip to the cemetery. LOL!

Of course, I would have loved to see her score another big payday with that big bet, but dem’s da breaks, y’know? I have no idea what she was thinking but the clue confused me too. I would have been like Alyssa — out of time, if I was able to even get as much in as she did.

Another thing I liked about this match was when Randy got the clue about the Castro twins from Texas, and Kate got the signer DD on Gerry, from her home state. Serendipity!

  4. John B, says:

Tough break for Alyssa though it would not have changed the outcome.

how can the center of Africa be in 2 different locations, and be over 800 miles apart to boot? Maybe she thought Lake Victoria is in the DRC????

Congratulations to Randy. Seems he was not too confident, judging from the size of his wager, could have cleaned up with 31.600…… He covered against Alyssa and was hoping Kate would get it wrong and bet it all again or cover against him (just a $ 199 difference..). Well, it worked out for him and 20 K IS a nice payday.
