Final Jeopardy: 18th Century America (4-23-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/23/2018) in the category “18th Century America” was:

We’re back to the regular games today with 2x champ Kristin Robbins, who has won $44,994 so far. In Game 3, she is up against these two players: Rex Moroux, from Lafayette, LA; and Kate Jovin, from Somerville, MA.

WHAT ARE THE ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION?

After various revisions, the Articles of Confederation were adopted by Congress on 11/15/1777. Copies were sent to the states, telling them to vote on them by 3/10/1778. On 6/26/1778, Congress ordered that the Articles be “engrossed” or written in calligraphy on parchment. The calligrapher finished the task by the next day but made mistakes and the engrossing had to be redone. The corrected Articles were presented to Congress on 7/9/1778 and signed by delegates from the 8 states that had already ratified them (CT, MA, NH, NY, PA, RI, SC and VA). By 1779, DE, GA, NJ and NC were on board, with Maryland as the last holdout. Maryland finally ratified the Articles and America’s first Constitution went into effect on 3/1/1781. By this time, disillusionment with the Articles was such that steps toward a new Constitution were already underway and our current Constitution was drafted in 1787. It replaced the Articles of Confederation on 3/4/1789.

Rex bet $6,500, finishing with $15,500.

Kristin bet everything she had, doubling her score to $24,800.

Kate bet $14,399, just a dollar short of everything. She won the match with $28,799 and that made her the new Jeopardy! champ.

  1. Becci says:

VJ, Where can I find all of the clues (& answers) for the category: “A Ruview of Movies”?

    Thanks in advance.

    • VJ says:

@Becci, I am pretty sure that the show will put a clip of the category up on its site or on its Twitter by tomorrow. They already put one up announcing the category with Trebek saying he is going to be on RuPaul’s Drag Race (as he also said today on the show). When I see the clip, I’ll put a link to it here.

    • VJ says:

@Becci, here is a link to an online article that has all the RuPaul clues and answers as well as tweets from Jeopardy!

      • Becci says:

Thanks VJ. I didn’t watch the show so I was trying to figure out what the heck it meant (Ruview). I play the J6 clues every day at the Jeopardy website & the one clue they had wasn’t really clear about the RuPaul link.

  2. Albert says:

What was wrong with Rex? Why was he always putting his hand up to his face when answering? Also, why could Rex not get going until the very end? He seemed so out of place, yet he was able to get on the show. Maybe I have a chance after seeing Rex.

  3. John B. says:

Another strategy for FJ betting. If you are wrong (as leader you probably lose anyway, so go for it and clean up)! Or you can bet nothing and # 2 is wrong….. who’s to say what’s the right way?

  4. John B. says:

Congratulations VJ! Only one to be optimistic enough.

    • VJ says:

Thanks John. It’s nice to get one right once in a while but even better when it’s on a triple solve.

      • John B. says:

Yes, makes you more optimistic about the knowledge people have (should have), especially when the make it on the air (btw (Mexico, a five letter country??)…I know, the stress. But still Mexico is not exactly poor. Unstable, yes, but Haiti is a disgrace to the entire world. Where is the U.N.???? But then I bet the Haitian ambassador to the U.N. makes more in a month than an entire village in Haiti.

        • VJ says:

@John, on the betting strategy, gotta say I love it when they go for it and clean up!

I hated to see Kristin lose the game because of that DD. idk what to say about it. I thought it was well known that it’s the poorest country in this hemisphere. What is it? A quarter the size of Cuba with darned near as many people? idk if one of the other players knew it, but none of them got Malta either with Kate giving a 6-letter country on that, too. You’ll see it in the clues below.

I would have loved seeing kristin win again but after seeing druhv won this month, we need a streaker in Kate. Congrats to the triple solve by the contestants. By the way did any U.S. states in the west adopt the articles of confederation in the 1770s or later?

    • John B. says:

      @ Lou
For what it’s worth not to my knowledge. After the original 13 states (former colonies) signed, everybody just” joined” the Union w/o signing the AoC.
