James ran away with it yet again, this time to the tune of $52,126. Rebecca was next with $4,600 and Rob was in third place with $2,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS LORD ELGIN?

Lord Byron specifically mentioned Lord Elgin in his poem “The Curse of Minerva.”:

“Know, Alaric and Elgin did the rest.
That all may learn from whence the plunderer came,
The insulted wall sustains his hated name:”

Byron proceeded to compare Elgin to a “filthy jackal.” Elgin’s position was that he had permission from the Ottoman Sultan to plunder away.

Long-time dispute: In 1982, actress Melina Mercouri, then Greece’s Minister of Culture and Sciences, told the world: “I think that the time has come for these marbles to come back to the blue sky of Attica….”

Rob got it right. His $727 bet brought him up to $2,727.

Sarah went with “Melbourne.” She only lost $599 so she finished with $4,001.

James got it, too. He bet $38,686 and won the game with $90,812. His 13-day total is $942,738. That ties James with Matt Jackson for 13 games and gives him a 7th spot on 10 highest single games winnings. We’ll all be holding our collective breath tomorrow to see if he wins Game 14 and hits the million. He *only* needs to win $57,262 to do it!

Holy Week came and went, we gave away eggs on Easter Sunday, but James showed NO MERCY, finding Daily Doubles and got it right, turning this into yet another runaway. Looks like 13 is a lucky number for him and tomorrow, he’s going for his 14th game win AND $1 million. Will that happen? Join again tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen, as we will be witnessing another slice of Jeopardy! history.

  2. Lou says:

By the way congratulations to James once again for winning game 13. I’m hoping he will reach the million dollar mark tomorrow. I’m glad two players got the final right But Rob couldn’t get much going today. John and VJ why did Rebecca go for a city in Australia and not a lord?

    • VJ says:

Interestingly, Lou, Rebecca thought of Lord Melbourne because his wife had an affair with Lord Byron.

She is the one who called Byron “mad, bad and dangerous to know.”

Lord Melbourne is the one the Australian city is named after.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
There was a Lord Melbourne at the same time, though he was not an archeologist, but Prime Minister twice. One under William IV, then dismissed and a second time under William IV and Queen Victoria again. He never was in Australia as far as I know, but you can choose pretty much any name when you are elevated to the next level as a peer. The British have some strange traditions when choosing their peerage name. He could have named himself Lord ” soandso” if he would have been so inclined, provided there was no other Lord with that name (or family where that title was passed on).

  3. John B./I. says:

This time we have congratulations to offer to – who else- James again. If he keeps winning like that he would have about 5 1/3 mill. should he win 74 games….’Nough said!
Pleasantly surprised that 2 players came up with Elgin, aka Thomas Bruce, his birth name, being a descendant of Robert the Bruce.

    • VJ says:

@John, did you notice that Melina Mercouri quote? I had to get that in because of “Attica”

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
Yes, I did. How did you guess the exact amount of one of James’ bets, though it was a DD and not FJ? A date or occasion of a certain importance?

        • VJ says:

Take a look at all of James’ bets on this statistics post — he makes those same two bets he made in the Double Jeopardy! round a lot. One is his wedding anniversary and the other is his daughter’s birthday.

Loved the $200 Funeral clue about “Cleopatra” !!

        • kassidy says:

I loved that “late to her own funeral” clue, too!

      • John B./I. says:

Got it. Btw, haven’t seen the show yet. I hope Steve McQueen didn’t come up in the “Actors” category.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

Well, we have two tragedies struck before that. The Sri Lanka Easter Sunday bombing, which killed 290 people, and the Luzon 6.1 earthquake, which killed 9 people, and it would likely go up as the days and weeks follow. We paid our tributes to those who are dealing with these unprecedented events.

  4. Richard Corliss says:

Rebecca McNitt from Ann Arbor, Michigan is kind of familiar to Jeopardy! champion Sarah McNitt.
