Beat Shazam Recap: July 15, 2019

Here’s a recap of the 7th episode of Beat Shazam, featuring host Jamie Foxx and his deejay daughter, Corinne Marie. This week, Jamie said to be great at this game you have to know all types of music: “from George Jones to Post Malone, from Cake to Drake.” (Yeah, we look forward to that part to see who he is going to come up with.)

Here are the 3 teams:

  • Jessica & Mallory, best friends & dental hygienists from Charleston in the Palmetto State (SC), who grew up singing with a trucker parent
  • Fletcher & Jalen, best friends from Los Angeles in the Golden State (CA), who first met at Temple U in Philly
  • Allie & Mike, a husband and wife, from Galloway in the Garden State (NJ), who have known each other since middle school

If you have not seen this episode and still plan to, STOP READING. The correct responses and scores after each song are in this recap.

Round 1 – Shazam Shuffle
First 4 are worth $2000 each. The last one (Fast Track) is worth $4000.
1. FUNK: “Superstition” (Stevie Wonder)
SC $0 CA $0 NJ $2000
Everyone got it. NJ got it the fastest at 1.45
2. ALTERNATIVE: “Lump” (The Presidents of the United States of America)
SC $0 CA $0 NJ $4000
This was between SC and NJ. NJ took it at 1.27. CA had “Peaches”
3. TODAY’S HITS: “No Tears Left to Cry” (Ariana Grande)
SC $0 CA $2000 NJ $4000
CA came in at 1.36 to win it over everyone else
4. KANYE WEST: “Jesus Walks”
SC $0 CA $2000 NJ $4000
CA went with “Can’t Tell Me a Thing” and the others chose “Heartless,” so no dough
5. FAST TRACK – ’80s: “I’m So Excited (The Pointer Sisters)
SC $0 CA $2000 NJ $8000
CA had “It’s Raining Men” (hallelujah!). SC and NJ both got it in under 2 seconds, but NJ was faster at 1.33

Allie & Mike (NJ) doubled their money on the Fast Track and they now have a $6K lead over CA. SC is still on the schneid going into the second round.

Round 2: That’s My Jam! Two votes went to STADIUM ANTHEMS before we even got to the third vote, so Divas were out.
First 3: $3000 each. Fast Track: $6000. Team with the least $$ goes home.
1. “The Final Countdown” (Europe)
SC $0 CA $2000 NJ $11,000
It was 1.50 for NJ to 2.63 for SC. CA had “Eye of the Tiger”
2. “Pump Up the Jam” (Technotronic)
SC $3000 CA $2000 NJ $11,000
NJ was out with “Shake that Booty.” The Charleston gals finally got on the board, coming in at 1.25 to CA’s 1.71
3. “Louie Louie” (The Kingsmen)
SC $3000 CA $2000 NJ $14,000
Only NJ got the right title for one of the most recognizable songs ever.
4. FAST TRACK: “All I Do Is Win” (DJ Khaled Ft. T-Pain, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg & Rick Ross)
SC $3000 CA $8000 NJ $14,000
Everyone got it in under 2 seconds. CA came in at 1.25 for the win

That was an important win for Fletcher & Jalen (CA). It allowed them to stay in the game. Unfortunately, it meant the end of the line for Jessica & Mallory (SC). At $14K, Allie & Mike (NJ) had a $7K lead but it’s not unusual to see the tables get turned when we get into these big money rounds.

Round 3: Corinne’s Choice this week is: ’70s
First 3: $5000 each. Fast Track: $10,000.
1. “Fat Bottomed Girls” (Queen)
CA $8,000 NJ $14,000
Both teams went with “Take Me Home Tonight”
2. “Tear the Roof Off This Sucker (Give Up the Funk)” (Parliament)
CA $8,000 NJ $14,000
Both teams struck out again. “Does anybody want this cash?” Jamie asked
3. “Mockingbird” (Carly Simon & James Taylor)
CA $8,000 NJ $19,000
Only NJ got that one. CA went with Diamond Ring
4. FAST TRACK: “Ballroom Blitz” (Sweet)
CA $8,000 NJ $29,000
Both teams were right. NJ was faster at 1.79 to CA’s 2.06

So $15K in that round went to Allie & Mike (NJ) while Fletcher & Jalen (CA) got nothing, putting them at a serious disadvantage going into the last round. They need to get down to business in the next round where there’s 50 grand up for grabs.

Round 4: Without Words.
First 3: $10,000 each. Fast Track: $20,000. High score goes on to try to Beat Shazam.
1. “Dancing in the Street” (Martha & the Vandellas)
CA $18,000 NJ $39,000
Both teams were right and both came in at 2.07 so they both get $10K. How sweet that is!
2. “Run-Around” (Blues Traveler)
CA $18,000 NJ $49,000
NJ got the only right title. CA had “Wild Night”
3. “Confessions Part II” (Usher)
CA $18,000 NJ $49,000
Both teams blew it. They both went with “Burn”
4. FAST TRACK: “Long Train Runnin'” (The Doobie Brothers)
CA $18,000 NJ $69,000
NJ got it 1.68 to CA’s 2.57

Fletcher & Jalen (CA) at least racked up one win in that round, giving them more money to take home. They get half their bank for making it this far, or $9,000. Allie & Mike (NJ) are headed into battle with Shazam.

One Million Beat Shazam Round – 6 songs
First 5: $25,000 each. They only get a shot at one million dollar on the last song if they get the first 5 right. There are no multiple choice screens and they have to know the song’s exact title before Shazam to be right.
1. 2010s: “Cake by the Ocean” (DNCE) – Allie hopped right on that buzzer for this one – $94,000
2. Made in the U.K.: “Hold Me Now” (Thompson Twins) – Mike nailed it – $119,000
3. Hip Hop: “Rosa Parks” (Outkast) – Oops! Mike went with Ms. Jackson
4. Grammy Winners: “Don’t Know Why” (Norah Jones) – What a shame. Allie added the word “I”, making her answer wrong
5. Love Songs: “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” (The Spinners) – No dice on that one. They began the round with $69,000 and finished with $119,000.

Allie & Mike were able to pick up up another $50K. They can’t play for the million but, if they so choose, they still have a shot at doubling their money. They can play one more song against Shazam. If they are right, they will win $238,000. If they play Shazam and lose, it will cost them half their money and they will be going home with $59,500. As always, Jamie gave them the category to help them decide: Classic Rock. Allie & Mike both liked the category but “we’re from Atlantic City,” Mike said, “and we know what happens when you gamble.” They decided to walk away with the $119,000 they had and play the last song for “kicks and giggles,” as Jamie put it. This lyric “Tonight’s the night I’m gonna push it to the limit” didn’t ring any instant bells for Mike, even though he knew the Foreigner song, “Double Vision” once it got underway.

Mike and Allie made a wise decision and, as Allie said, the $119,000 was “not bad for a day’s work.” Congrats!
