Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE EDWARD, GEORGE & HENRY?

The reign of Henry VI (House of Lancaster) is most closely associated with the War of the Roses. He was also the only English king to be crowned king in England and in France (at Notre Dame de Paris in 1431 at age 10). Edward VI (Tudor), only son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour, became king in 1547 at age 9 but died at age 15. After that Lady Jane Grey business, the throne passed to his half-sisters, first Mary, then Elizabeth I. George VI (Windsor) was the father of Queen Elizabeth II. I like this article about James: Big Bets and a Fast Buzzer: The Secret Sauce of James Holzhauer’s ‘Jeopardy!’ Success

    Someone in my household said if they wrote an article about him, it means his swan song is near. We’ll see.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      @Cece His swan song will be far from that. He will beat Jennings’ records.

      • Cece says:

        @John Christian & VJ, I don’t believe the article means the end of his run either, but I ain’t arguing with a quasi-mother-in-law.

        I was surprised to learn that, after Jenning’s run, J producers “changed the rules to make things easier on players attempting to unseat a champion.” Also, that James took the online tryout test 13 times. Wow.

        • John B./I. says:

          @Cece
          Somehow I have the feeling that WHEN James will lose, it will be ironically because of some trivial matter. But only time will tell.
          If nothing else, he certainly gives J! a much needed boost in an otherwise rather dull season until now and the ratings have also gone through the roof.
          He just looks so young. If I wouldn’t know he’s 34, I would believe it should he say he’s 27 or so. They tape 5 games a day, meaning some games are played most likely towards late afternoon but I never saw a “5 o’clock” shadow on him. That certainly makes him look younger. But either way, his reflexes and incredible wide range of things you wouldn’t suspect he would know makes him a phenomenon. He also has a sort of modest and unpretentious way. Overall a very positive, unassuming and decent personality as far as I can tell.

          For such a young age (at MY age I consider him very young) a very refreshing overall picture.

    • VJ says:

      @Cece, if that was true, he would have lost already. lol. There have been articles, articles and more articles on him since the first time he broke Roger Craig’s record.

      I’ll post some links tomorrow.

  2. John B./I. says:

    @Bob Chang
    I’m pretty sure Sony could afford it! Plus, when the ratings go up, so do the rates for the commercials…

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

    Well, it’s Black Saturday, and James did it again: missed on the first, came back roaring like a hurricane with the other 2 DD. But this Final Jeopardy? Very tough, because you have to go all the way back to 1066 and revisit British history at a glance. The clue indicated the Roman numeral reign and you have to name ALL three, so it is indeed tough. Nate pulled a Zelenskiy and didn’t bet anything, while Gaby came close, but William? It will take centuries to have that.

    So, another week came to an end, and with the final day of Coachella and Easter Sunday coming up, James has a lot of work to do in order to end Ken Jennings’ legacy of winning more money and staying in the game. Next week, back to our regular week, he will DEFINITELY go for the million-dollar mark. So, everyone take care and we’ll see you all on Monday.

  4. Tom says:

    I wonder if they’ll go back to limiting players to a 5 day reign?

    • VJ says:

      @Tom, I doubt it. We’ve talked about that before during someone else’s run. I was in favor of a 10-day limit myself. I think that would be good in the interest of fairness to the opponents while still allowing a superstar player to shine.

      Suppose you were someone who got to weigh a cutoff option against the publicity the show gets out of a run like this. How would you vote? .

    • John Christian Ambion says:

      @Tom Limiting players to a 5-day reign will produce more 4-day winners competing in the ToC than 5-day ones. Also, 230 shows, including regular and tournament play, won’t be enough.

  5. VJ says:

    I really got a kick out of this game — a $15K bet on a Ballet Daily Double. omg!! 🤣🤣

  6. Bob Chang says:

    Just a thought, if and when James beats Ken’s 74 game win streak he will have made about $5, 325,000 (based on $71K average win x 75 games). He now has the top 5 scores all-time and 6 of the top 8 wins all-time in just 12 games! Another thought, in another 12 games he could reasonably have ALL 10 of the top 10 best scores!!!

  7. William Weyser says:

    Earlier this week, I saw Nate Marks on the Contestant Lineup, with him playing today, and he was a familiar face to me. Why is that? Well, he was on Sports Jeopardy! in 2015, the same year that James was on 500 Questions, and Nate won his Regular-Season game. Not only that, he was 1 of the 3 highest scorers among the winners. He finished in 2nd place, and won $25,000. Steve Greene, who I’m sure is the same Steve Greene that was a semi-finalist in the 2010-B JEOPARDY! College Championship, and represented UCLA, finished in 3rd place, and won $10,000, and Justin Shibilski won the Sports Jeopardy! Championship, and won $50,000. Anyways, this is not the 1st time that this has happened. On the final week of Season 34 of JEOPARDY!, Ron Freshour was on JEOPARDY!, and he was familiar to me, because he was on Sports Jeopardy! in 2015. He won 2 games, before meeting 15-time champion Vinny Varadarajan, and losing to him. After seeing Ron do well on Sports Jeopardy!, you would think that he would do well on regular JEOPARDY! Right? Well,… that thought backfired. He didn’t do well, and was out of contention going into Final Jeopardy!, but before the 2 other players wrote down the correct response of ”What are North Korea & China?”, Alex said ”Why do I get the feeling that Ron is going to have fun with is?”. So, what did Ron put down as his response? ”WHAT IS THE JEFF BRIDGES?” Hilarious, but wrong. Moving on. James is now the 3rd highest winner ever with $851,926. Will he get to $1,000,000? We’ll find out starting Monday, on Earth Day, and like St. Patrick’s Day, I will wear something green that day.

  8. John B./I. says:

    There is really not much to say. Just found all 3 DDs again, only the third time he missed one (all misses in the first round if I recall that correctly),no problem……another runaway = execution of the other 2 players…..Congratulations!! (though that does not even come close anymore)!!!!

    So, have a great long weekend everybody and for those who celebrate it HAPPY EASTER!

  9. Lou says:

    So another week of a clean sweep with James despite the first daily double not in his favor but that’s okay. I guess next week should be giving James the confidence boost he needs. I really wondered why gabby went with William John? I really think James could end up getting ahead of Brad Rutters big win before getting to Ken Jennings.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
      FJ went with the 3 most popular names in British royalty. There was never a # 9 of any name. William is rather rare, one Prince William becomes King and he retains his name as regnal name , he would only be William V.

  10. Richard Corliss says:

    This is getting crazy. I hope he makes it back to the Tournament of Champions and wins $250,000.

    • VJ says:

      Nah, he doesn’t need to win that. They ought to put him in the next million dollar tournament they cook up.

      • JJ says:

        No kidding! $250K is only about an hours worth of work (including commercials!) to this superstar!

      • Richard Corliss says:

        Will we ever have a giant killer?

        • John B./I. says:

          @Richard Corliss
          The way it looks, only if he gets hit by lightning,…. but then James is like the personified lightning himself….sorry, don’t mean to jinx anything. I wonder if he gets a discount at the hotel he’s staying, even though 5 games are taped per weekday he might stay quite a while….if the management has any sense, they’ll advertise the fact that James stays with them , upgrade and comp him anyway!

        • William Weyser says:

          We will. We just don’t know when that will happen.

        • John Christian Ambion says:

          And it will happen once James ended Ken Jennings’ records. A giant killer will appear on his 101st day of his reign.

      • John B./I. says:

        If James keeps this up for a year, you can shorten Sony stock….lol

        • Richard Corliss says:

          In the Next Great Champion promo, James makes it to $2,000,000.

        • VJ says:

          It does not say that he does, Richard — it’s a teaser and just shows the record that he *might* break

      • Richard Corliss says:

        They’re not gonna have a next $1,000,000 tournament.

        • Bob Chang says:

          I’d be in favor of a $1million plus tournament of Super Champions, that is Ken, Brad, and James only with the first to win five games gets a million, if second and/or third wins four they get $500,000, if three than $250,000. Everyone also keeps what they win in each game. This guarantees anywhere from 5 to 13 games and keeps interest high in each game and the overall tournament. Of course, that’s a lot of money but I’d watch for sure!
