Final Jeopardy: Stamps (4-15-19)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/15/2019) in the category “Stamps” was:

Living people are rarely seen on a stamp, but in July 1945 the USPS issued one depicting this military event

7x champ James Holzhauer, brought his winnings up to an astounding $415,035 last week. In Game 8, he takes on these two players: Kevin Bohannon, a cell biologist from Ann Arbor, MI; and Megan McLeod, a cinema manager from Ottawa, Ontario.

Round 1 Categories: The First Winner – World Full of Idioms – Biblical Paintings – Name in Common – Inside the Country – April Foolery

James found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “First Winner” under the $600 clue on the 18th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $8,400 now, $5,400 more than Kevin in second place. He bet it all and thought it was Paris to Dakar. That was WRONG.

In 1903 Maurice Garin was its first winner in 94 hours, 33 minutes, 14 seconds. show

Kevin finished in the lead with $4,400. James was second with $2,800 and Megan was last with $1,200.

Round 2 Categories: Italian, Stressing – Pop Culture Pairs – On Pins & Needles – One-Act Plays – Let’s Go to the Wildlife Refuge – Onomatopoetic Words

James found the first Daily Double in “Italian Stressing” under the $1,200 clue on the 7th pick. He was back in the lead with $7,200 now, $400 more than Kevin in second place. He bet it all and, this time, he was RIGHT.

This physicist had a Jewish wife, Laura; when Fascist Italy adopted policies of Nazi Germany, it was time to leave. show

2 clues later, James landed on the last Daily Double in “One-Act Plays” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $15,600, he had $8,800 more than Kevin in second place. He bet $8,615 and he was RIGHT. And just like that, he went from $2,800 at the start of the round to $24,215 on the 9th clue.

James finished in the lead with a runaway $35,415. Kevin was next with $12,400 and Megan was in third place with $4,800.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE FLAG-RAISING AT IWO JIMA?

Associated Press photograph Joe Rosenthal took the iconic photograph of 6 Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima on 2/23/1945. It was featured on the 3 cents U.S. postage stamp issued on 7/11/1945. From Linn’s Stamp News: “Purple was the designated color for 3¢ stamps paying the first-class letter rate. The color and the fact that living people (three of six men in the photo survived the battle) were shown on the stamp caused quite a furor. Postal authorities quickly changed the color of the stamp to Marine green. Objections to living people being represented in the stamp design were overcome by noting that the stamp honored the fighting spirit of the Marines on Iwo Jima, not specific individuals.”

A Daily Double from 1999: BIT ROLES ($600): 3 of the men who raised the flag on Mount Suribachi in World War II had bit roles in this 1949 John Wayne film

Megan knew what it was but had difficulty completing her response. She lost $3.800 and had $1,000 left.

Kevin got it right. He didn’t bet anything so he remained at $12,400.

James got it right, too. He bet $10,029 so he won the game with $45,444. His 8-day total is $460,479, surpassing Julia Collins’ $428,100 and David Madden’s $430,400. James is now No. 2 in Highest Winnings (Regular Season Play) and the only one left to beat is Ken Jennings!

Final Jeopardy (4/15/2019) James Holzhauer, Kevin Bohannon, Megan McLeod

FYI: There have been a bunch of FJ clues about stamps, though none in a category simply called “Stamps.” This was the FJ clue on 12/22/1986:
STAMPS & COINS: These people are the only exception to the rule “Must be dead 10 years to be on a U.S. stamp”

2 triple stumper from the last round:

ON PINS & NEEDLES ($1200) It’s the 6-letter term for the “needle” that follows the groove in a vinyl record

LET’S GO TO THE WILDLIFE REFUGE ($1200) Thousands of acres in Virginia’s James River refuge are covered by the loblolly species of this type of evergreen tree

2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Universities”

This university on John C. Calhoun’s former plantation is named for Calhoun’s son-in-law, who gave the land. show

  1. Jim says:

USPS is United States Postal Service and is not a cabinet level organization.

  2. aaaa says:

The “pigeon pen” clue in Onomatopoeic Words $400 in DJ! appears to have a second correct response, Cote , in addition to Coop

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

Similar to what happened on April 10, James got it wrong on the DD in the J! round, but came back and rebounded in DJ!, but this time, he found all three DD and all three players are in Final Jeopardy!, and in 8 days, the only person standing on his way is Ken Jennings. According to another site, he has an average of 25 games to win, down 2 from Friday’s game. @William Weyser, @VJ, @John B./I. I have a prediction that Ken Jennings’ record will come to an end.

    • John B./I. says:

      @John Christian Ambion
Maybe in money won, but not in # of games. James will not win more than74 games imo.

  4. Donzie says:

There was no USPS in 1945. The U. S. Post Office (USPO) was still in the Cabinet then. The question was WRONG.

  5. Bob Chang says:

A bit premature to make Jenning’s comparisons, but he is on pace to break $1,000,000 in 16 games and exceed Jennings 74 game winnings in 55 games! Nevertheless, anyone is beatable at any time and winning 55 games and/or74 games is never certain regardless of great skill .Recall Jennings narrowly won his first game and lost his 75th to a 1 game winner of but 15,000! Nevertheless, I put his chance of winning any particular game at well over 95%!

  6. Albert says:

Would simply ‘Iwo Jima’ have been accepted?

    • VJ says:

I don’t think so. That’s location and the clue specifically said “this military event” — hmmm, now that makes me wonder if just “raising the flag” would have been accepted

      • John B./I. says:

        @VJ
The clue was a little ambiguous imo. “Raising the flag”, even after or during a battle is not necessarily a “military event” A military event would be “The Battle of Iwo Jima” or the “Battle of the Bulge”, “Battle of the Coral Sea”, “Invasion of Normandy or D-Day”…..maybe it’s splitting hairs, but how often was a flag raised? Hundreds of millions of times, and even if it was during a battle then the battle should be the” military event”, wouldn’t you say? So “raising the flag” would most likely not have been accepted either. WHAT flag raising???? Also, as Donzie pointed out : when you see USPS you think United States Postal Service, not established until 1971. USPS in the clue was for United….SYSTEM. But then the clue was already sort of complex.Megan obviously knew it but ran out of time. Not that it mattered since it was a runaway. As a P.S. : James’ reflexes on the buzzer are amazing, to say the least.

        • VJ says:

yeah, after I said that, I realized they wouldn’t accept it because the clue refers specifically to the date the post office commemorated that event

  7. Richard Corliss says:

Half the month is almost over and we are 3 weeks away from the Teachers Tournament.

    • William Weyser says:

I’m really excited for the Teachers Tournament, and honestly, I’ve been more excited for that than the Finale of the All-Star Games.

      • Richard Corliss says:

You should be excited about David Madden and Larissa Kelly getting redemption. Why were you less excited about the All-Star Games?

      • John B./I. says:

So was I. I considered the “All Star GAme” kind of an overkill.

  8. aaaa says:

Without fully looking at the missed DD I’d have said Boston Marathon because the show is airing on Boston marathon day today, and the sixth anniversary of the bombing.

    • John B./I. says:

      @aaaa
      Yeah, but 98 hours…….I’d walk faster…LOL

    • VJ says:

@aaaa, no, you wouldn’t have because this $800 clue was shown and solved by James before the DD came up:

($800) J.J. McDermott barely broke 3 hours getting from Ashland to the Back Bay as its first winner in 1897

  9. John B./I. says:

Well, what is there left to Say. For the second time in a row James got all 3 DDs, again he missed (like last Wed) but was able to not only catch up but make it a runaway yet again…CONGRATULATIONS JAMES!!
As before, Mr. T would say: I pity the fool (in this case the players that have to face James), though at one point somebody will beat him. Remember the incredible “H&R Block” by Ken? Everything ends, but when? It could take quite a while. The difference I see between Ken and James is primarily that James is more aggressive than Ken was. I am still surprised at every game the things he knows. Rather somewhat unusual for a 34 year old, but GOOD FOR HIM! Obviously he uses the free time he has well or has an excellent memory or both.
Refreshing to see somebody with his qualities, a sense of humor too and not arrogant or conceited. Right now bad for the other players, but as the saying goes: the many must lose for the few to win…..

    • Albert says:

I read an article about James. James said that he has been studying for many years specifically for the show. It shows because James actively picks the Poetry categories, while many people stay away from Poetry. A math major like James knowing Poetry means he has studied a lot outside of school to do well on the show.

      • VJ says:

@Albert, perhaps he did a decent amount of prep in the poetry dept but his $5K bet on an $800 clue showed he’s not that confident about the category

  10. Lou says:

Wow oh wow. James has finally managed to surpass Julia Collins and Dave Madden in winnings. Although he messed up on that daily double he made another comeback in the end. A most impressive performance. I bet Drew horwood and Ben Ingram are proud as well of James. Congratulations to our gambler. This guy knows how to get things going. John, do you think James could get to a million this week?

  11. Richard Corliss says:

It’s still too soon to make comparisons with Ken Jennings.

  12. VJ says:

I have to go out for an hour or two, so everything is early today and if I messed anything up, I’ll have to fix it later.

All I’ve got time to say now, is WOW, James!!
