Final Jeopardy: Chemical Element Names (11-8-22)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/8/2022) in the category “Chemical Element Names” was:

The 3 elements whose names begin with 2 vowels are iodine & these 2, one synthetic & one natural

On Election Day 2022 and the second anniversary of the passing of Alex Trebek, Jeopardy’s beloved long-time host, today’s contestants are these three superchamps: Amy Schneider, a writer from Oakland, CA; Matt Amodio, a postdoctoral researcher from Cambridge, MA; and Mattea Roach, a writer and podcaster from Toronto, Ontario.

Why are the superchamps playing? Ken explains it all:

Round 1 Categories: Election Day – Hits of 2002 – Lesser-Known Geography – You Sit on It – Number, Please – Remembering Alex Trebek

Matt found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Election Day” under the $400 clue with 7 clues left after it. Matt was in last place with $1,200, $1,800 less than Amy’s lead. Matt bet it all and he was RIGHT.

One reporter wrote, “Tranquility Forsook Springfield” on Election Day of this year show

Amy finished in the lead with $3,800. Matt was in second place with $3,400 and Mattea was last with $2,800. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Hope You Read Middlemarch – We’ll Always Have the Treaty of Paris – Movie Quotes – Potpourri – Rhymes with a Snow White Dwarf – Wrong but Excellent

Mattea found the first Daily Double in “Movie Quotes” under the $1,600 clue on the second pick of the round. She was in the lead with $2,800, $1,000 more than Amy in second place. Mattea bet it all and was RIGHT.

Matt got the last Daily Double in “We’ll Always Have the Treaty of Paris” under the $2,000 clue on the fifth pick of the round. In second place with $2,600, $3,600 less than Mattea’s lead. Matt bet it all and he was RIGHT.

Mattea finished in the lead with $17,600. Amy was in second place with $7,400 and Matt was last with $3,600. Four $400 clues were not shown.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE EINSTEINIUM & EUROPIUM?

Einsteinium is the synthetic element, symbol Eu, Atomic No. 99. It was discovered in December 1952 “by Albert Ghiorso and co-workers at the University of California, Berkeley in collaboration with the Argonne and Los Alamos National Laboratories, in the fallout from the Ivy Mike nuclear test.” (Wikipedia)

Europium is the natural element, symbol Es, Atomic No. 63. Its discovery is “generally credited to French chemist Eugène-Anatole Demarçay, who suspected samples of the recently discovered element samarium were contaminated with an unknown element in 1896 and who was able to isolate it in 1901.” (Wikipedia)

Sporcle Quiz: If you got this clue, you might want to try naming all the elements that start with a vowel. You’ve got a headstart with 3 names and 3 minutes to get the rest.

Matt had “einsteinium & eulerium” but bet nothing so his score remained $3,600.

Amy only had Europium. That cost her $6,496 and left her with $904.

Mattea got it right and also bet nothing, winning the game with $17,600.

Mattea is still as annoying as ever.

  2. Jason says:

I have a sinking feeling that Mattea will become the least charismatic champion ever. I don’t know if I couldn’t put my finger on it before, but, it’s the cadence of her voice, with every response sounding like she’s not sure. Then, a zero wager. Boring, boring, boring.

I did like Ken’s screw up. As to parallel VJ, I won’t say anymore.

  3. William Weyser says:

Mattea Roach beat both millionaires. YES! Congratulations, Mattea.

Unplayed $400 clues in Double Jeopardy:
    – We’ll Always Have The Treaty Of Paris
    – Movie Quotes
    – Rhymes With A Snow White Dwarf
    – Wrong But Excellent

  5. Lou says:

I loved all the funny moments from today’s show and this was a good exhibition match for all three superchamps today. Congrats to Mattea getting today’s final right.

  6. Judy O'Toole says:

My husband and I were just telling someone the story of Alex and his half-moon keys. Always loved his answer about having no idea how to use them.

  7. VJ says:

There were some funny moments in today’s show but I didn’t say anything about them in the recap so viewers can react to them spontaneously when they see the show. I’m sure there will be a video of one of those moments and I’ll add it to the recap later tonight or tomorrow.

    • Richard Corliss says:

Why is Matt always saying “What’s” instead of “What is”?

      • Jason says:

Not the contraction, per se, but, Matt said in an interview that using “what” saved him that much brain power that he could apply to the clue. I would guess, without evidence, that “What’s” is in the same vein.

        • VJ says:

heh — I would think it takes more brain power to remember to say “what’s” when some of us would automatically say “who’s” when it’s a person

      • Howard says:

Matt was interviewed after his initial run, and he said his lawyer father told him it was perfectly OK to say “what’s” each time. I find it terribly annoying and unnecessary.

I noticed during the intro that he’s no longer from New Haven (Yale) and is now at Cambridge (Harvard or MIT) doing post-doctoral work that I’m sure I’d never understand.

The show was pre-empted here by election news but I saw it today on Youtube. I follow the show on Facebook and today got an email with a link to it.
