Final Jeopardy: British Names (12-24-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/24/2018) in the category “British Names” was:

The last name of this 17th c. Baronet who held many offices is synonymous with the govt. & especially the PM’s residence

New champ Graham Fulton III, a musician research engineering asst., won $22,200 last Friday. In his second game, he is up against: Nicole Neroulias Gupte, , a nonprofit communications consultant from Seattle, WA; and Charbel Barakat, an attorney from Tampa, FL.

Round 1 Categories: Not for Profit – Anagrammed Minerals – Words of Comfort – It’s Christmas Eve – My Name is My Name! – The American Revolution

Charbel found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Not for Profit” under the $600 clue, with a dozen clues to go after it. He was in the lead with $5,600, twice as much a Graham in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Charbel finished in the lead with $8,600. Graham was second with $5,400 and Nicole was last with $4,200.

Round 2 Categories: Very Definitely for Profit – Asian Geography – “Pot”Pourri – Literary Characters Based on Real People – Sticker Shock – Let’s Put on a Show

Charbel found the first Daily Double in “For Profit” under the $1,200 clue on the 8th pick. He was in the lead with $10,600 now, $1,600 more than Graham in second place. Supremely confident, he made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Around 1920 he turned a $30 investment into a get-rich-quick “scheme” that defrauded folks out of $15 million. show

Charbel found the last Daily Double in “Let’s Put On a Show” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $25,600. Graham was in second place with $7,800 but a reversal (see below) put Nicole in second place with $8,200. Charbel nixed Alex’s assumption that he would bet it all again. He merely bet $600 and he was RIGHT, but likely wished he bet a few thou at least.

Charbel finished in the lead with a runaway $28,200. Nicole was next with $10,200 and Graham was in third place with $9,000.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS DOWNING?

The BCW Project’s bio of Sir George Downing (1623-82) describes him as a “Parliamentarian army chaplain, spymaster and diplomat who became notorious for his betrayal of exiled regicides after the Restoration.” Historic U.K. has the history of 10 Downing Street before and after it came into the possession of Sir George Downing, a “perfidious rogue” according to Samuel Pepys’ diary.

A 1995 clue: BRITISH HISTORY ($200) Sir Robert Walpole was the first prime minister to live at this London address

Graham bet it all, doubling his score to $18,000.

Nicole’s $7,800 bet brought her up to $18,000 too.

Charbel added $2,500 to win the game with $30,700. Charbel Barakat is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (12/24/2018) Graham Fulton III, Nicole Neroulias Gupte, Charbel Barakat

Reversal: “POT”POURRI ($800) A dictator — Alex chuckled at Nicole’s response of “tinpot” when they were looking for “despot,” but later said the judges decided to accept tinpot because they were “in the Christmas spirit.” Nicole picked up $1,600.

2 triple stumpers from the last round:

VERY DEFINITELY FOR PROFIT ($2000) Last name of American tobacco’s James B., who smoked up profits with American Cigar & American Snuff

LITERARY CHARACTERS BASED ON REAL PEOPLE ($1,200) Murder victim Mary Rogers had her name Frenchified as this character in an Edgar Allan Poe mystery

2 years ago: BOTH players left in FJ! got this one in “Moons & Planets”

The name of this moon refers to the mythical group that its planet’s name belonged to. show

I wonder if Charbel’s huge DD bet was overconfidence? The category was not exactly specific. If it had been something like Presidents, French History, Chemistry etc… ok. But “For Profit”? Could have been anything. Interesting though that a lawyer would be familiar with Ponzi 😄😄

Charbel’s self-congratulatory fist pumping is excruciating to watch. I hope he loses ASAP.

A very easy FJ! to start off the final week of 2018, and Merry Christmas from the Philippines, actually. Next week, it will be 2019, so I hope Charbel could go to the ToC before the year ends.

  4. VJ says:

@John, they had a clue today about Silent Nights’s 200th anniv. You’ll see it soon….

A short PS to VJ’s comment: George II. offered Walpole 10 Downing as a gift for his services. Walpole however insisted that it should be a gift to the Office of First Lord of the Treasury. Since the PM is also holding that office, a new PM moves automatically there, since it was given to the “office” and not an individual when George II. agreed to Walpole’s proposal.

Well let me say congrats on the contestants getting a triple solve today. Though Graham was falling behind a bit he and Nicole did what they have to do though they couldn’t overtake Charbel. At least now, I hope that Charbel will try to get a streak going if possible but we will see. And also Merry Christmas to VJ and John and to all on Fikkle Fame. Still though is there like a Christmas market somewhere on Downing Street in Britain John?

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
Merry Christmas to you as well. my friend!
No, but there are over a dozen Christmas Markets in London, the 2 most popular ones the one at Hyde Park and the other near Tate Britain (Vauxhall), about 10 walking minutes south of Westminster, so therefore pretty close to Downing.
After the bombing by the IRA in 1991 Downing Street is guarded and blocked off at both ends. In earlier times you had just 2 bobbies there, one in front and one inside the door and it was a main tourist attraction.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@Lou It’s very chaotic at the House of Commons, now both sides agree on a no-deal Brexit. Only a People’s Vote can save it.

  7. John B./I. says:

Since it is already Christmas Day past the Date Linee, e.g. The Philippines, and close to Christmas Eve in the eastern part of the mainland, MERRY CHRISTMAS or MELE KALIKIMAKA from Maui ! May your holidays be happy and peaceful and hopefully you will be together with all you love, in person or if not possible in spirit! Bless you all!

Congratulations to CHARBEL, quite a gutsy move on that second DD.

2 little trivia bits: 10 Downing Str. has actually 3 residents if the PM is married: the PM, his/her spouse and the “Chief Mouser”, a tradition since the 1920s. Leave it to the British to give the house cat a title….😄😄😄

And as I type this it is Christmas Eve in Europe, exactly 200 years ago “Stille Nacht. Heilige Nacht” was performed in the small chapel of Oberndorf, a small village in the province of Salzburg in Austria for the first time. 1818 emperor Francis II/Francis I. was ruling, the one who abolished the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 and became Francis I. of Austria-Hungary instead of Francis II. of the HRE. I am proud that Austria gave this song to the world.
Bing Crosby released it in 1935, it being the third most sold record ever. The most sold is also by BC, “White Christmas” and #2: Elton John, “Candle in the Wind”.

    Nochmals FROHE WEIHNACHTEN!
