Final Jeopardy: Literary Adaptations (4-12-19)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/12/2019) in the category “Literary Adaptations” was:
The director of the 2018 TV version of this 1953 classic said, yes, books were harmed in the making of this motion picture
6x champ James Holzhauer, is up to $325,877 now. That could rise by leaps and bounds in Game 7, unless one of these challengers can send James home. Ali Filipowicz, a homemaker from Alexandria, VA; and Mike Dindoffer, a writer & teacher from Greenfield, MA.

Round 1 Categories: General Knowledge – Women Of Politics – I’d Like To Sell A Vowel – American Literature – City Adjectives – Google’s Top Searches, 1999-2018
James found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “City Adjectives” under the $400 clue, with 10 clues to go after it. He was in the lead with $10,400, $7,200 more than Ali in second place. He bet $9,812 (his wedding anniversary) and he was RIGHT.
Cantabrigian means from one of 2 notes college cities named this. show
James finished in the lead with $22,012. Ali was second with $3,600 and Mike was last with $1,800. There was a reversal in this round that affected Mike (see below).
Round 2 Categories: Moolah – Science – A “B”6 Shot – Colombia Pictures – Classic Film – 5 Easy Pieces
James found the first Daily Double in “Moolah” under the $1,600 clue on the 8th pick. He was in the lead with $29,212 now, $24,012 more than Ali in second place. He bet $11,914 and he was RIGHT.
The mint in this Western city produces about half of U.S. coinage & is the USA’s second-largest gold depository . show
3 clues later, James found the last Daily Double in “Colombia Pictures” under the $2,000 clue. In the lead with $42,726 now, he had $36,326 more than Ali in second place. He bet $11,022 and he was RIGHT.
There are great beaches at the Walled City founded as this de Indias, meaning “Carthage of the Indies” in English. show
James finished in the lead with $58,148. Ali was next with $13,200 and Mike was in third place with $7,400.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Ramin Bahrani, the director of the 2018 TV adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s 1953 novel “Fahrenheit 451” wrote a big ol’ essay in the NYT, explaining why the books had to go up in flames in his film and how the books were chosen. On the IMDB trivia page for the 1966 version directed by François Truffaut, it says that he ignored a request from the studio’s legal department to only burn public domain books because he thought that living authors would think it was hot to be included (pun intended).WHAT IS “FAHRENHEIT 451”?
Funny, that they’ve never had a clue on who played Guy Montag in the 1966 film (Oskar Werner). Maybe they will have him and Michael B. Jordan in a “Same Role” category someday.
Mike thought it was “Burn After Reading,” never a novel. He only lost $300 so he finished with $7,100.
Ali got it right. She bet $1,601, bringing her score up to $14,801.
James got it, too. He bet $31,010 bet so he won this game with $89,158. His 7-day total is $415,035.
Reversal: CITY ADJECTIVES ($1000) Of or relating to a northern Italian city, like veal coated with breadcrumbs – Mike’s response of “Parmagian” was rejected and James got what they were looking for with “Milanese.” Right before the chat, Mike got an okay on that and $2,000 added to his score.
I only saw one triple stumper in the whole game:
MOOLAH ($2000) This 5-letter word refers to a special non-circulating coin that collectors prize for its fine detail and mirror-like finish
2 years ago: NONE of the players got this FJ in “Countries of the World”
A 2010 study of this country is subtitled “Inside the Land of Milk and Money” show

What a massacre, geez!
Right, Cece? James gives new meaning to the phrase “fortune favors the bold” on this show !!
Right! I’ve never heard that expression before, but he sure does. I’m also impressed with his wide range of knowledge. Far as I know, he has only missed 1 daily double, correct?
Yeah, I think so — the one about Holidays & Observances, when he said Articles of Confederation instead of The BIll of Rights
Thanks, VJ.
For anyone who pauses the commercials or didn’t see the show…
I almost forgot to mention that on the commercial before FJ!, they announced the winner of the All Stars Fantasy Sweepstakes
Congrats to JOAN Z from Las Vegas
The announcement is also on Twitter
Well, one week before the Holy Week in the Philippines, but James Holzhauer SHOWS. NO. MERCY. AND. I. MEAN. IT. After his slide in the last two days, he came back to his winning form and BOOM! In just 7 days, he broke the bank, winning $415,000+. So, this week is HISTORIC because we saw the end of Roger Craig’s new one-day record, a historic first for being the person who broke into the six-figures in the podium, and ended with him being the NEW #1 in the entire ToC, if he loses next week. As Alex Trebek said about him, “Is it too soon to be in comparison to Ken Jennings?”
Only time will tell. But for now, have a great Holy Week, everybody.
@John Christian Ambio
You too, my friend! Thank you! And the same to everybody else!
If he continues with just an “average “ (for him) performance in #8 he will be second in non-tournament winnings only to Jennings!
@Bob I don’t know what to say, but I will say he will beat Jennings in the winnings.
Hitting all 3 DDs helped of course. They added over 32 K to his score BEFORE fj, enabling him to bet a bundle and the rest ist (for now) history……he holds the 2 highest one day winning scores. Is it just me or does he look younger than he is? Just looking at him I would have said, 27,28.
Btw, that nobody got the “Milk and money” FJ 2 years ago is one of my examples for predictions: You would think it had to be a clean sweep, instead : NADA!!! I wonder if the players would have gotten it, had the substituted “milk” with “cheese”??🧀
His 7-day total is higher than austin roger’s 12-day total.
Wow! Now the two largest Jeopardy winnings ever, $200,072 in those two days!!! Unbelievable! If he continues to shine can’t wait to see him face off against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter! “Watson”, though, might still be too much of an opponent!
Just barely over $200,000, as you know.
He hasn’t faced an opponent of the quality as Ken and Brad. My gut tells me he won’t be as bold with the dd’s since he won’t be able to make it up as easily if he misses.
Thanks for the clever link for “Rip Van Winkle”, VJ. I think Grape Nut would enjoy it as well.
so happy you liked that, Rhonda. It’s one of my doo wop favorites! bom bom, bom bom bom bom bom
Very much so, VJ! I loved it!
I bet things will change for James next week figuring that both challengers will hit daily doubles before he does.
Maybe. Maybe not.
$22.012 is the highest score ever in the first round.
Man this is probably the biggest winning amount James earned so far. Even higher than Austin Rogers. This week has been a clean sweep for James so far. Also what is burn after reading? I’ve never heard of that before. What exactly was Mike thinking with that response, John and VJ? We now have the highest seven time winner on top of the leaderboard. Only one dismissal this week and one missed final jeopardy. I can see James continuing this streak next week.
@Lou, it was a 2008 film with a lot of big stars (Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, George Clooney, Frances McDormand etc). It’s pretty funny. Watch the trailer: Burn After Reading
LINK: 10 more clues from the game
Oh okay, now I got it. Thanks for the information. Still. I’m thinking James will extend his streak as long as he doesn’t miss any final jeopardy next week. Many of his opponents didn’t have much of a chance against James today. This is what I would call a serial winner.
@Lou
As I said, maybe Mike was being cute, referring to reading “Playboy” and “Burn after reading”, so the wife won’t find it???LOL
This will be a tough decision for VJ to pick the easiest FJ for this week. Probably a toss up between the Romanovs (only 2 got it, but then there were only 2 players left and I’m sure Jeff would have gotten it and today, which should have been a clean sweep.Either Mike was on the right track (books were burned) or he referred to “Playboy”as an “Activity” (Burn after reading…???LOL)
Remarkable that James found twice as many DDs than the statistical average. 14/21, being right 13 times. All 3 DDs were easy today and also all 7 FJs in James’ games were easy, maybe with the exception of “Munchkins” and “Jane Fonda”, since they were kind of generation FJs and the oldest player was the only one who got J.F.
CONGRATULATIONS to James, not only for win #7 but also for shattering Craig’s one day record by over 12K. So the week ended on a high note, except for the one miss. That’s why I don’t like extreme predictions. You have the easiest FJ and one player has a mental block, overthinks it, misreads the clue…and v.v. the toughest clue where you think “no way” and by some chance one player heard or read about JUST about that clue.
In conclusion: Have a great weekend, everybody!! Take care and till Monday!!!🙂
PS
I forget to say ..”shattering Craig’s….again”. James did so already on Tuesday the first time. So now James won 2 x more in one day than Craig.
Week where something good happens on JEOPARDY! EVERY SINGLE DAY: Check!
And that is what you call, @William Weyser, the JAMES HOLZHAUER week. He’s a machine. A supercomputer. A walking encyclopedia. A beast in the making. AND a BOSS.
Exactly!
Man. He keeps kicking his opponents’ butts.
@richard And he will, because on Monday, he has now a 95% of winning in 8 games.
His final score was his second highest total of jeopardy, $89,158.
@elan xu
And he also has the highest, when he won over 110.914 on Tuesday….not too shabby I’d say!!!!
@elan xu On Tudesay, he dedicated to his daughter with winnings of her birthday. Now, his winnings is the ZIP code of Las Vegas — 89158. Get it? Coincidence? Illuminati much?
