Final Jeopardy: The Oscars (10-13-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/13/2016) in the category “The Oscars” was:

In 2005 he lost for Best Actor but won for directing, at 74 becoming the oldest winner ever in that category.

New champ Susan Cole won $20,600 yesterday. She’s looking for a second win today and these contestants are looking to take over her spot: Amanda Watson, from Tulsa, OK; and Bhaskara Marthi, from Sunnyvale, CA.

Round 1 Categories: TV Themes – Math – Geographic Terms – Ladies & Gentlemen – Step Right “Up” – Circus Performers

Amanda found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Math” under the $1,000 clue on the 15th pick of the round. She was in the lead with $3,800, $2,400 more than Bhaskara in second place. She bet $2,000 and took a guess with “infinity.” That was WRONG.

Amanda finished in the lead with $5,600. Susan was second with $4,000 and Bhaskara was last with $2,400.

Susan got the last Daily Double in “Transportation,” the very last clue of the round. In the lead with $11,400, she had $2,200 more than Amanda in second place. She bet $2,000 and thought they came on trains. That was WRONG.

Susan finished in the lead with $9,400. Amanda was next with $9,200 and Bhaskara was in third place with $5,600.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS CLINT EASTWOOD?

At the 77th Annual Academy Awards (2-27-2005), Clint Eastwood won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Directing for “Million Dollar Baby.” Eastwood was also nominated in the Best Actor category for his performance as Frankie Dunn in the film. However, Jamie Foxx took the top honors in that category for his portrayal of Ray Charles in “Ray.” It was not the first time that happened. At the 65th Annual Academy Awards (3-29-1993), Eastwood was nominated for Best Director and Best Actor for “Unforgiven.” He won the Oscar for directing but lost the Best Actor award to Al Pacino (“Scent of a Woman”).

Eastwood was 62 years old then and George Cukor had the oldest Director distinction at the time. Roman Polanski topped Cukor when he won Best Director for “The Pianist” in 2003 at age 69. So it was Polanski that Eastwood topped in 2005. See Statista’s list of oldest directing Academy Award winners.

Bhaskara bet $5,000, bringing him up to $10,600.

Amanda bet $2,001, finishing with $11,201.

Susan bet $9,000 so she won her second match with $18,400. Her 2-day total is $39,000.

With a Math category, I was expecting to see a comment by MathWiz. Huh.

    MW phone home. 🙂

Thanks vj. However, I was surprised that Trebek said he thought fj would be a tough clue for the contestants. I seldom predict but went for 3/3 because imo Clint Eastwood transcends all age groups.

Morgan Freeman is another actor who transcends all age groups imo. Some of these celebrities just keep working and never fade away.

Congrats on your correct prediction, Jacob. Susan looked a little distracted at times during the match, Unless I’m missing something, she bet to tie if Amanda bet it all.

I have 9 more clues from the game over here now, including that Poetic Category

VJ, I remember that you posted the Tennyson video a while back, I thought of it tonight when Alex read the “crossing the bar” clue.
