Final Jeopardy: Countries of the World (4-14-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/14/2017) in the category “Countries of the World” was:

A 2010 study of this country is subtitled “Inside the Land of Milk and Money”

New champ Deborah Beams won $22,000 yesterday. In the last game of the week, her opponents are: Jim Hope, from Tustin, CA; and Elspeth Green, from Princeton, NJ.

Round 1 Categories: Fencing – In the News – 2-letter Words – Shallow Thoughts – Mountains – Royal Opera House Titles

Jim found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Mountains” under the $800 clue, with 8 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $5,800, $2,200 ahead of Elspeth in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Elspeth finished in the lead with $7,000. Jim was second with $6,800 and Deborah was last with $600.

Round 2 Categories: Fencing – History at Sea – What ’80s Movie Is That Song From? – Starts With “R” – Literary Chicago – Hidden Genius

Deborah found the first Daily Double in “History at Sea” under the $800 clue on the 14th pick. She was in third place with $1,800 at this point, $8,400 less than Elspeth’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double (though she could have bet $2K) and she was RIGHT.

Deborah found the last Daily Double in “Literary Chicago” under the $1,600 clue with only 3 clues to go after it. In third place with $6,400, she had $6,000 less than Jim’s lead. She bet $2,000 and had no guess so she was WRONG.

That ended the round. Jim finished in the lead with $12,400. Elspeth was next with $11,800 and Deborah was in third place with $4,400.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS SWITZERLAND?

According to author Diccon Bewes’ website, his 2010 book “Swiss Watching” will give you “the real and normally unseen Switzerland, a place where the breathtaking scenery shaped a nation not just a tour itinerary, and where tradition is as important as innovation.”

He also has a Swiss Trivia section on his blog, with some quizzes and an article that would have been quite helpful yesterday: 10 Facts About The Geneva Convention.

“There’s a trap here, and you had to be very, very careful,” Alex said, before revealing the responses.

Deborah “fell into the trap” with Israel. She lost her $3,100 bet, leaving her with $1,300.

Elspeth was going for the UAE, but ran out of time before completing her E. She lost $11,201 and finished with $599.

Jim had the same response as Deborah. He lost $11,201 and had $1,199 left. So Deborah was the beneficiary of their large bets! She remains the Jeopardy! champ with a 2-day total of $23,300.

Wow, this game was similar to November 28.

  2. Lou says:

Congrats to deborah, I was surprised that she had won that small amount and I was rooting for the second lady elspeth and I love her name. Still though I can empathize with her. But elspeth should have bet at least 1500 dollars or less in order to stay in the lead and still win the game. Remember when Frederique Delapree played this game after defeating Sandie Baker? I wonder if she had missed a final jeopardy question in one of her games, VJ?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, yes I remember Frédérique. Love her name, too! Frédérique got 2 of her 3 FJs right, the last 2 games. She defeated Sandie Baker by standing pat when no one got FJ. Julia Collins defeated Frédérique. That was a tight first match for Julia. Pre-FJ, she had $8,000 and Frédérique had $7,800!

      Here’s a link to those 3 matches

  3. Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

Elspeth’s bet should have been $2999!

    • William Weyser says:

Exactly, if Elspeth, cool name by the way, wagered small, she would have won, and had been back on Monday with a sizable check waiting for her in the mail, right about now. Instead, the check is thrown away, Deborah got lucky, & Siddarth Hariharan, if you’re watching this, I’m sure that you can empathize with Deborah, because the same thing happened to you in 1 of your games.

    • EricS says:

Yes, but anywhere in range of $601 to $2999 would have given her the lead if she gave the correct response and locked Deborah out completely.
Again, if you are going to be a contestant, you may just be wasting your chance to win with inadequate game theory.

  4. rhonda says:

VJ, I couldn’t hear the answer to the last clue before the first break, I believe it was in the Shallow Thoughts category? Would you be able to recall it for me? Thanks!

    • VJ says:

Yes, Rhonda, not sure if you want the clue too (let me know) but Deborah gave the right response on that — mindfulness

      • rhonda says:

Thanks so much, VJ. Yes, if you don’t mind giving me the clue, I don’t think that I caught it all.

        • VJ says:

No problem, Rhonda. Here it is:

SHALLOW THOUGHTS ($1,000) Do the “leaves on a stream” exercise to get this, defined by psychology today as active, open attention to the present

LINK 12 more clues from this match, including the 80s Songs category, and a link to Jim Hope’s Simpsons character.

  5. VJ says:

That was quite the surprise, wasn’t it? I was also surprised that Alex didn’t mention the book’s actual title.

Congrats to Deborah. No offense to her, but I was kinda rooting for Elspeth because I liked her name. Kind of the way I used to pick horses to bet on. LOL. No offense to her either. that just occurred to me randomly.
