BOTH contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHO ARE THE ROMANOVS?

Russian Tsar Nicholas II, his wife, Alexandra, and their 5 children were murdered on July 17, 1918 by the Bolsheviks. In August of 2000, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized the royal family as “passion bearers,” because they faced their deaths in a Christ-like manner, distinguishing them from martrys, who die for their faith. Earlier on November 1, 1982 (per the NYT), part of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia had canonized the slain Romanovs as martyrs, along with “tens of thousands of others” killed in the Russian Revolution.

From 2009: TROUBLE ($2000) When this family dynasty took power in Russia in 1613, the “Time of Troubles” came to an end

Laura bet $1,000, finishing with $6,800.

James bet $21,112 and won this game with $54,322. His 5-day total is $298,687.

Final Jeopardy (4/10/2019) James Holzhauer, Jeff Henderson, Laura Hertzfeld

THE CIVIL WAR ($400) On July 21, 1861 the Union attacked the Confederates near a stone bridge crossing this creek in the First Battle of it

MOLLUSKS ($2000) Once believed to sail on water using 2 enlarged arms as sails, they are named for the crew who sought the Golden Fleece

I’m not trying to be too picky, but the final clue is misleading. Russia is not in Europe, so calling this European history is incorrect. Though we do learn this in European history, I still think it should have been categorized differently; though, it was an incredibly easy clue.

Another Canadian dismissal was the result of James’ near flawless performance. Although he was wrong in the early stages, he came back and went “all in” on the first. Laura tried to prevent James’s runaway game, but a very costly mistake. I have to say, what a turnaround. Anyway, @VJ, @John B./I. I have to say that had the Romanovs never executed, Russia would’ve been better because the Soviet Union didn’t exist, and WW2 would still be an Allied victory.

Anyway, back to James Holzhauer, the promo suggests that it could go to $2 million and 20 games. Will that prophecy become a reality? Who knows.

His five-day total is close to $300,000.

  4. Jack says:

I could be wrong but did that Argonaut clue actually ask for the crew’s name? I could have sworn it was asking for the mollusk name.

YES! My wish has been granted, despite my day not being as perfectly kind as I hoped it would be.

This guy will change how the game is played. But only for a brief period of time. Lesser players will try to emulate and fail. Things will be back to normal: conservative bets and low gains.

  8. Lou says:

Well no harm on James missing that daily double since it didn’t hurt him at all. Although I really wondered how did Laura confuse a conch shell with an underwater sea apparatus like the nautilis John and VJ? Jeff is dismissed unfortunately and couldn’t keep up. Congratulations to james on his fifth win and I definitely think he could surpass Larissa Kelly. He is definitely in the tournament of champions now. Two streakers in a row, I guess this month definitely brought luck on James today.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, actually Laura was not thinking of Jules Verne’s submarine — nautilus is another name for the answer they were looking for on the $2000 clue in “Mollusks” and Jeff said it but it didn’t work because the clue mentioned the Golden Fleece.

At this rate, James might be up to or over half a million after Friday’s game.

He could end up being a millionaire by the time May comes. It could happen.

        • John B./I. says:

          @Lou
IF he is still on in May he WILL have won way over 1 M…it’s only April 10 and I think the TT is not until beginning of May or thereabouts.

  9. JJ says:

This dude is a MACHINE… I want to see him take on IBM’s “Watson”! LOL

  10. Richard Corliss says:

My gosh! What’ve they been feeding him?

  11. John B./I. says:

Well, not much to say really. We have -as far as I counted – James getting 9/15 DJs (with only today’s first wrong, but it was early, so no harm-no foul), he made 4 of his 5 wins runaways and the FJs in the 5 games were rather easy. Only 3 misses out of 15 FJs (assuming Jeff would have gotten the Romanovs) 2 with “Berlin” (which kind of surprised me) and 1 munchkin miss. Still…WOW!!!

I wonder if James will play in the next ToC or if he will still be in “regular” play when the invitations for the next ToC go out??? In either case, just the spark this season needed, it was sliding into the abyss of last season. So CONGRATULATIONS (yet again) to James!
