Final Jeopardy: Canadian Geography (4-1-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/1/2020) in the category “Canadian Geography” was:

Canada’s Four Corners monument marks the junction of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut & these 2 prairie provinces

New champ Leanne Gonzalez-Singer, a legal secretary from New York, NY, won $22,500 yesterday. In Game 2, she takes on these two players: Hemant Mehta, blogger from Naperville, IL; and Kami Narayan, an educational advocate from Saint Louis, MO.

Round 1 Categories: FBI Quantico – Going Pronoun – Nations in the Native Tongue – Potent Potable Analogies – Dream Boats – Hugh Jackman

Leanne found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Dream Boats” under the $800 clue, with 4 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $5,000, $2,800 more than Hemant in second place. She bet $1,500 and thought it was “Amistad”. That was WRONG.

Leanne finished in the lead with $3,100. Hemant was second with $2,200 and Kami was last with $1,800.

Round 2 Categories: Planetary Science – We’re on a Crusade – Gifts for Animal Lovers – Recent Plays From Real Life – American Women – Crossword Clues “J”

Leanne found the first Daily Double in “Recent Plays from Real Life” under the $1,200 clue on the 13th pick. She was in second place with $6,700 now, $3,500 less than Hemant’s lead. She bet $2,500 and she was RIGHT.

The Public Theater’s “Mother of the Maid” is about Isabelle,, the mom of this martyr. show

They did not get to the last Daily Double. It was under one of two clues left in “Planetary Science” or one of two in the “Crusade” category.

Leanne finished in the lead with $14,400. Hemant was next with $14,200 and Kami was in third place with $1,000.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT ARE MANITOBA & SASKATCHEWAN?

Atlas Obscura describes Canada’s Four Corners monument: “Miles into the wilderness from any road or dwelling, the squat aluminium obelisk is a geocacher’s dream. The monument stands around three feet tall and marks the intersection of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.”

They say the trip to see it with your own eyes is a difficult one, with no trails or roads. “Due to shifting political boundaries, there is some debate as to whether the Four Corners Monument actually sits on the meeting spot of the four territories, but few people have been interested enough to hike in and find out.”

Kami was half-right with Saskatchewan & Alberta. She bet and lost it all.

Hemant went with Newfoundland and Labrador (that’s only one province). That cost him a mere $201. He had $13,999 left.

Leanne also had Saskatchewan & Alberta. She lost $14,300, finishing with $100. That made Hemant Mehta the new Jeopardy! champ. Whoa, Hemant! That turned out to be a stellar bet. 😁

Final Jeopardy (4/1/2020) Leanne Gonzalez-Singer, Hemant Mehta, Kami Narayan

($200) The Orca, from this 1974 book

Hemant Mehta is no relation to 2017 College Championship 2nd runner-up Viraj Mehta.

  2. Albert says:

Kami looks a lot like Priyanka Chopra.

With the Corona going around Trebek should just retire. I would.

  3. Richard Corliss says:

Kami Narayan is no relation to 2016 Teen champion Sharath Narayan.

I thought this was a relatively easy FJ–quite shocking it proved to be a Triple Stumper. My poor dear Mother bought me a cardboard-piece map of North America before I started school with first grade, so I knew all 10 provinces and both territories (Nunavat was cut from NWT in 1999 as a giveback to the indigenous peoples from whom Canada was taken). BCHASMO is a mnemonic device that may help some with the western and prairie provinces. I know that teen eco champion and science/geography nerd Greta Thunberg would have aced this final for sure! 🙂 Canadian-born Alex Trebek would have been proud.

As you know, I’ve seen this happen a lot of times when a Canadian Clue pops up, and the contestants don’t know that much about Canada, and because Alex Trebek was born in Canada, it either breaks Alex’s heart, or makes Alex most likely hate those contestants for the rest of his life, or both.

      • VJ says:

William, I really don’t think Alex has such extreme reactions when contestants don’t get Canadian geography clues. It’s been pretty rare for a long time for a geography category or FJ! to show up when there are 2 or 3 contestants who are aces in that area, and not just about Canada!

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

Tough FJ as we end with a triple stumper since nobody knows about geography.

  6. JP says:

I actually had the same answer as the two ladies. Very tough clue considering that Alberta seems like a much more likely guess for the termination of the ‘Northwest Territories’ than Manitoba, which is in the center of the country.

    • VJ says:

Well, that’s what I said too… now back to studying the map !!

      • JP says:

I actually have Ikea’s 6’6″ x 4’7″ wall map hanging in my apartment. I looked at it in the wee hours of the morning after reading the clue and in a daze convinced myself Alberta was correct. The territorial and provincial boundaries are not very clear on the map.

        • VJ says:

That’s funny, JP. To have the answer right in front of you! I have a framed map of the world behind the TV in my bedroom and a kid’s world globe on a side cabinet but I slept on the sofa all night.

  7. Lou says:

Kami couldn’t get anything going today and her opponents were quick on the buzzer. I’m not surprised that no one knew much about Canadian provinces. Let’s hope Hermant can build up on his win and end the leader curse. Speaking of that book by Joseph Conrad, there was a similar title in Law and order season 16 VJ. It involved the mysterious death of a journalist named Teague. Did you know that?

  8. JJ says:

Alex must have been disheartened over the “triple stumper” by today’s contestants…

    • VJ says:

He didn’t seem so, but perhaps he’ll say something snarky about it in tomorrow’s intro .🤣🤣🤣
