The most famous of all the units fighting in Cuba in the Spanish-American War was the “Rough Riders,” the nickname of the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under Theodore Roosevelt’s command. Roosevelt resigned his position as Asst. Secretary of the Navy in May 1898 to join the volunteer cavalry that first saw action in the Battle of Las Guásimas on June 24, 1898 and became celebrated for their role in the Battle of San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898. The first reunion of the Rough Riders was held in 1899 on the 1st anniversary of Las Guásimas in Las Vegas, New Mexico. Then governor of New York State, Roosevelt arrived by train in his uniform on the 24th and gave a speech the next day. The Rough Riders continued to hold reunions until 1967.
In 1899, Roosevelt also published an account of the Rough Riders (available on Google Books) from his journals that was an immediate best-seller.
Daniel bet $6,987. He finished with $13,987.
Ashley bet $15,199. That brought her up to $30,399.

From ‘The Philadelphia Story’ (so funny)
Jack won by a margin of $2.
By the way I was able to run all the clues in.the disaster category and knew most of the H locations in the H map category but I knew that there was another county in New Jersey called Hackensack. I guessed Hoboken. But it was a minor mistake. How did you do in those categories, VJ?
I kinda bombed in the Physics category, Lou. Hackensack is a city, not a county. It’s in Bergen County like the clue said. Hoboken is in Hudson County, but it’s not the county seat — that’s Jersey City. Anyhow, when I saw that clue, I started singing some Billy Joel — “Who needs a house out in Hackensack? Is that all you get for your money?”
The clue that surprised me the most today was FJ — I thought it was easy enough already without the image. I don’t know how I would feel about it if I was in second place with an easy clue like that — maybe like, hmmm, I never really had a shot at winning in the final.

VJ, the category” What Kind of Tree Are You? ” reminded me of a contestant years ago, Ben-Hur (of all names). He said he was asked that question on a job interview and he replied “an oak tree because they have strong branches he could beat you with”, or some such. He didn’t get the job, lol. Remember that?
@Cece, yes!! That was an unforgettable story. LOL! It was so funny, I mentioned it in the comments. The day before, in the game he won, he talked about how he had a bunch of brothers and all their names started with Ben. 🙂
You did—I was surprised Tom didn’t make a comment about that story.Btw, I miss Tom’s comments; we haven’t heard from him in a while.
Well, let’s hope he’s okay… maybe he has just given up on the show. No denying some of these FJ’s and DD’s are just way too easy! I think he would have thrown a shoe at the TV on this FJ 😀
Hahaha. I haven’t watched the show lately—decided to take a break, just not feelin’ it…I’m just reading your recaps.for now.
Well I m glad to see a triple solve today. Big bets made and still no streaker. But will jack be able to take the helm before the college championship starts, VJ? I’m surprised that jack managed to hit all the daily doubles. He could very well be a toc contender. Still, what were some of the clues that you found surprising today?
