Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS McGRUFF (THE CRIME DOG)?

Mental Floss explains the history of McGruff in its “Paw Enforcement” article, and how Jack Keil, the executive creative director of the Dancer Fitzgerald Sample ad agency, came up with the original idea for the dog detective that asked everyone to help “take a bite out of crime.” Inspired by Smokey Bear, he thought about an elephant that would stamp out crime, and a hopping mad anti-crime rabbit. He settled on a dog with a Keystone Cop hat that looked something like Snoopy. That evolved into McGruff.

The character got its name from a New Orleans police officer who submitted it in a cereal box contest. Jack Keil voiced McGruff in the commercials.

Khalilah went with Scooby Doo. She didn’t bet anything so she stayed at $4,200.

Monya got it right with “MacGruff”. She bet it all and finished with $13,600.

Kyle wrote down “Ruff McGruffin”. He already won the game so he didn’t bet anything. Kyle Dallman is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Poor Monya could have won that game had she not blown $6K on the Nixon DD.
Anyone else at least mildly surprised that 3 smart people didn’t know that Bobby Kennedy was the 2nd one assassinated in 1968, or that Rockefeller was Ford’s VP? Or that Kyle rifled through the golf category, but couldn’t come up with the US and British Opens?
Khalilah was fun to watch, but never figured to be more than a one-time champ.

    • VJ says:

@Howard, mildly surprised is an understatement re: RFK and Rockefeller (esp. RFK!!!!! — my jaw was on the floor). Actually, not knowing Nixon was a surprise, too.

  2. Robert says:

Real crappy final question. Meaningless cartoon figure shown on TV and urban ads. Who is watching?

  3. rhonda says:

VJ, I wonder why they didn’t go with a hopping mad anti-crime Lapin?

    • VJ says:

I don’t know, Rhonda. My best guess is that 1981 “Who Censored Roger Rabbit” book.

      • VJ says:

Oops, that was the year after — In that case, I bet they were glad they didn’t go with a rabbit 🤣🤣

  4. Anne says:

I couldn’t remember the dog’s name, but I knew it was the “crime dog”. I wonder if they would have accepted it? It’s only a part of the name , but, They accepted Mcgruff, which is only part of the name also.

    • VJ says:

Hi Anne, I can’t answer for the show definitively, but I don’t think they would have accepted just “crime dog.” I think the dog’s name was necessary. He is often referred to as just McGruff.

I think you’re right that it’s only part of his name per the NCPC’s trademark but even when they are talking about their standards for use of the name, they say their guidelines apply to “any kind of use of McGruff.”

      • Anne says:

Thanks VJ. You’re absolutely right. I had just graduated H.S. and did not watch a lot of TV in the 80’s. I only remember bits and pieces. Hope you’re staying healthy. These are such crazy times.

        • VJ says:

Thanks so much for the well wishes, Anne. So far so good over. I hope you and yours are doing well, too.

  5. Lou says:

I got a very good laugh out of ruff mcgruffin. Speaking of mcgruff the crime dog I’ve seen almost all the commercials on television about this since I was a little kid. As for Scooby doo and his friends, their specialty is solving kidnapping and robbery mysteries and not murder. VJ you know the song to Scooby doo right?

Congrats to Kyle today. Although too bad that daily double didn’t pay off for monya but glad she got this fj.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, I know a few lines of the Scooby Doo song. That cartoon wasn’t really one of my kids’ favorites back in the day.

      • Richard Corliss says:

        Scooby-Dooby-Doo, where are you?
We got some work to do now
        Scooby-Dooby-Doo, where are you?
We need some help from you now
Come on Scooby-Doo, I see you
        Pretending you got a sliver
But you’re not fooling me ’cause I can see
The way you shake and shiver
You know we got a mystery to solve
So Scooby-Doo be ready for your act, don’t hold back
And Scooby-Doo if you come through
You’re gonna have yourself a Scooby Snack, that’s a fact
        Scooby-Dooby-Doo, here are you
        You’re ready and you’re willin’
If we can count on you Scooby-Doo
I know we’ll catch that villain
