WHAT IS AACHEN?

From Historyhit.com: “On 21 October 1944, US troops occupied the German city of Aachen after 19 days of fighting. Aachen was one of the largest and toughest urban battles fought by US forces in World War Two, and the first city on German soil to be captured by the Allies.” The article goes on to explain why Aachen was of “huge strategic importance”. In addition to being the first WW2 battle fought in Germany, as the ancient seat of Charlemagne, Aachen was an important symbol of power to Hitler’s regime.

Today, Aachen Cathedral is the city’s main tourist attraction. Charlemagne is buried there and some 30 German kings and 12 queens were crowned there. In another first, Aachen Cathedral was the first German site to be granted UNESCO World Heritage status.

Becky didn’t have a response. She lost her $5,100 and finished with $100.

Matthew got it right. He added $2,500 to his score, bringing him up to $15,500.

Dan got it right, too. He bet $399 and won the game with $26,799. Dan Wohl is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Why was that one clue in the Double Jeopardy in a different font?

    • Lawrence says:

That was a reference to the answer (question) e.e. cummings, the poet who wrote mostly in all lowercase. May have made it too easy, but it was a low value clue.

  2. Howard says:

My head is spinning. A 4-day champ from my current home town is defeated by a challenger from the place I lived and received all of my pre-college education (Forest Hills, NY). And tomorrow he’ll be challenged by another fellow Portlander.

Gutsy move by Dan on that DD, which turned out to be a softball. As was the one Matthew missed in the first round. A non-runaway game would have made FJ riveting.

  3. Collin says:

The category for the last $400 clue in DJ! that they missed was “That’s Dedication”.

  4. Rick says:

A tough FJ (at least I thought so), and I’m only surprised that the two contestants got it right. Congratulations to them!

  5. Kevin Cheng says:

$20,000 is the highest Coryat score in the Sky’s the Limit era for a player locked out before Final. We saw a reversal today in the DJ! round that you forgot to put.
